Vicente strikes but Albion are held
9:49pm Tuesday 12th February 2013 in Albion By Howard Griggs
Vicente’s second goal in as many games was not enough as Albion were made to settle for a 1-1 draw with Blackburn at The Amex tonight.
Gus Poyet’s side created a host of chances but needed Vicente’s second-half penalty to earn them a point after Scott Dann headed the visitors into an interval lead against the run of play.
The result keeps Albion seventh in the Championship but now four points behind Middlesbrough in the final play-off position.
The Seagulls made a terrific start with Dean Hammond’s fierce strike deflected wide for a second-minute corner from which Leonardo Ulloa volleyed wide.
On eight minutes Vicente fizzed a shot wide from 22 yards and moments later Will Buckley chased a long ball, prodded it goalwards but Jake Kean scrambled back to push it away.
Buckley also diverted a Hammond shot on to the bar before Blackburn took the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute, Dann losing his marker to head in a Danny Murphy corner.
Despite losing Will Hoskins to an unfortunate injury, Albion continued to press and Hammond was twice denied by super saves from Kean in first-half stoppage time. The first was an unbelievable stop from point-blank range and the second kept out a stooping header.
Albion drew level 12 minutes into the second half when Markus Olsson was penalised for handling inside the penalty area, an offence spotted by a linesman, and Vicente drove the spot-kick down the middle for his second goal in as many games.
Rovers were not happy about the decision, particularly as they felt they should have had a penalty when the ball appeared to strike Adam El-Abd’s hand minutes earlier.
With man-of-the-match Vicente at the heart of things, Albion pressed for a winner but could not break down a stubborn Rovers side.
Substitute Kazenga LuaLua went closest to a winner with a 20-yard striker inches wide in the dying moments.

Worrying lack of goals from open play still.
Main questions from me to anyone who went tonight....how did Ulloa look? Why aren't we turning these chances into goals?

Be interesting to hear how Ulloa did? Was very surprised Gus went with Hoskins ahead of CMS, although perhaps I shouldn't have been given the latter's lack of goals.
Can we surprise everyone and pull off another shock victory at Cardiff on Saturday because that's what we really need?

I'd say we were actually very unlucky not to score from open play tonight. Their goalie played a blinder although I don't think he knew anything about half of his saves from close range!
Ulloa looked both a handful and a bit clumsy at times. Got into some good goalscoring positions but without the final touch on target. Then again his back heel flick (if he meant it?) in the second half would have been a fantastic goal. Certainly looked better than Rhodes who laboured along with his tea mates who collectively looked poor (although sound defensively). But typically of Brighton's season we conceded from a set piece against the run of play and were chasing the game from then on (ditto Middlesboro, Ipswich, Birmingham etc) and needed a slightly fortuitous penalty (especially as this was minutes after a genuine penalty appeal for Blackburn).
I know it's been said many times before but if we play like that for the rest of the season we should win more than we draw and lose.

Would have settled for a point at half-time (given our record of never having won a game from behind under Gus) but we really needed all three. These are the type of games you need to win to make the play-offs. Sounds like we had a ton of chances. When we have heard that before?

Ulloa on another night could have had a couple - no absolute glarers - in the right place(s) but low on luck - Vicente and others creating decent opportunities as the match report above suggests
Buckley looked way of the pace this evening for some reason - it seems to be a confidence thing - not running at and getting past people. The first 20 minutes and last 20 minutes of the match, some of the most exhilarating football we've seen from Albion at home this year - bridge rampaging, Vicente jinxing ion and out and making the short rapid passes and finding players that others don't - he seems to get the lucky bounces even
One save opportunity for TS this eve which sadly he didn't manage (or have much chance with) - otherwise everything standard - based on chances if everything had gone in, 8 - 2 would have been the result - like Bolton except we were the ones to come from behind
The refereeing stopped a free flowing match - but the penalty in our favour was most helpful in a situation where little would have come from it
Their goal came from a needless foul by Upson (yellow carded) in a not dangerous situation, the free kick from which he then had to head out for a corner - then the goal from poor marking - not a great set of circumstances and all against the run of play
As with Hull, all in all, whilst low on gaols overall as a match, especially from free play - excellent and exciting football
It'll happen for Ulloa and overall a confidence building match against a form side (following on from playing form side Sheffield Wednesday and form side, especially away from home, Hull!!)
Bridders immaculate, calm and collected and involve, as so often he is. Decent game and pushing forward from Hammond too

But hats off to Gus for starting with such a positive line-up and playing with such an attacking intent. We should have won, but didn't. Vicente was supreme, a real class apart. I hope Gus starts with the same personnel at Cardiff. It was positive, exciting and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. There have been games when we've only carved out 2 or 3 chances, but today we carved out 12 or more reasonable to good chances and should have won easily. That's football I'm afraid. Sometimes things just go your way, but I for one was delighted with the approach and desire and the effort we put in. We lack the clinical finishing of a Giroud, or a Murray, but I'm sure it will come.
But why oh why dont we put defenders on the post at corners ?

Vicente was immense and at the heart of all attacking play for Brighton. Well done to Gus for playing him for a full 90 (first time this season?) in a very attacking line up. He wanted the ball and controlled midfield for the first and last quarters.

I was in the north stand, so seeing him attack the goal in front of us in the second half was some truly sensational football. The ball is truly stuck to his feet at points, such a joy to watch.
Overall we should have won this game. We dominated first 20 mins, and felt very sad for Hoskins to get an injury as with the run of play you could see him scoring.
Not at all impressed with Blackburn's time wasting which started as soon as they scored a goal in the first half! Also didn't think much of the ref, classic example was second half Lualua getting completely taken out, but not yellow card given as they guy was already on a yellow, and then a minute later Lualua doesn't even touch the player and gets a yellow.
Their goalie made a lot of good saves, although I think half of them were fluked to be honest. I'm not sure he knew much about a few of them.
Ulloa I thought played well, looked a handful and does his job in getting back too when needed. I think with all this game time he will really come into his own, especially as he gels more and more with the team.
Only real gripe about our play tonight was with half their team on yellow cards LuaLua etc. should really of been taking on and running through their players. Ball would go down the wing and then just stop, nobody willing to try take it through.
Bring on Cardiff, will be a tricky game but with Vicente running the show who knows. UPA.

Their goalkeeper had to make some good saves and Blackburn had to scramble it off their goal line on a few occassions. KLL almost got the winner with a cracking shot. Ulloa fits in well and works hard, Vicente go through gaps that only he can see.
Apart from not winning, it was a good nights work from the lads and I can take loads of positives from it.
Vicente a whole 90 mins.
Shame about Hoskins, he fitted in well but I don't know how injured he is.
The stats say it all, this ex prem outfit did not impress and they would have gone away very happpy with a point.

Vicente was outstanding as was our football for the first fifteen minutes, their goal took the wind out of our sails, but deserved to win this game.
Bruno was poor again, passes going to the opposition too often. Buckley has lost his confidence, needs to find his form again, we are so dangerous when he is running at defenders.
How Murphy stayed on the park is a mystery, and seven minutes extra time overall, absolute joke.

Thought we dominated the game for the first 20 minutes-ish until we conceded due to poor marking.
I was happy for Hoskins, personally I feel CMS is a bit ineffective (his work rate is excellent it goes without saying.)
Felt bad for Hoskins though, just when he got another chance to prove himself he suffered an injury.
Seemed to me like Ulloa still needs to get used to the more physical aspect of Championship football, lots of times he was hassled off the ball and beaten in the air, although he had a few good touches and a decent strike on target. Didn't have a big part in today's game IMO.
Vicente had a good game, and of course he scored the penalty.
He made some very decent runs with some lovely touches and one ground cross I felt Ulloa maybe could have got to but didn't.
There were however a few bad passes from Vicente, but not everyone is perfect.
Good to get 90 minutes, still needs a bit more fitness I think.
Throughout the game it felt like Blackburn's target was a draw.
I also felt we were always waiting for that perfect goal opportunity when we should've played with a little more haste. There wasn't much threat upfront from us.
So many times the ball could've been played forward to the likes of Buckley but instead it was played safe by passing.
I do understand we play a passing game but I often think we should utilise some of our players speed more.
That's all I have time for now, I look forward to reading other people's thoughts on the game.

V poor referreeing again, blatant time wasting from the off and nothing done to stop it,a word or caution early on would have stopped that.
Same story dominate for first 20 mins and then concede from a set piece with a large centre back having a free header.
Very very frustrating to be at home, needing a win and always the slow build up to midfield and then to the back, then back to midfield and then try to walk the ball into the net.
Not one cross reached a Brighton player and these failings still continue.
Much as I would love Brighton to reach play offs I think 8th is going to be our best.
Poyet has done a great job but he still doesn't seem to know his best 11 and now that Hoskins is out was it wise to farm out Dobbie, who in my opinion was a panic buy.
Too many home games are v similar pattern now,its almost predictable.
I hope we get a result at Cardiff and hopefully will feel bit more positive tomorrow.

I'm not sure really how you can complain about the build up when we created so many chances. It's the finishing that is lacking, not the rest of the game.
I agree with the Vicente change but why the others. We never ever play the same team two weeks running and as such cannot achieve consistency and consequently are unable to string a series of wins together.

One thing we got from these last few days is that what Gus etc say to the press definitely isn't the whole truth. Nothing wrong with that because I guess it could be a smoke screen to the oppo but we can ignore it.
Hope Hoskins isn't too badly injured, I personally thought he was doing quite well from the left. He attacks crosses from the wide position better than a natural wide player does. Don't think there is any need to replace him at all though, he's hardly played himself. We have plenty of attacking options. LuaLua, Barnes, Orlandi, Lopez and CMS were all outside last night's starting 11.

Ironically it seems that the more possession we have the less likely we are to score. Our number of shots made and number on target are often high.
Last night was a good example with 16 shots with 10 on target and 65% possession. Against Bolton at the Amex we had 70% possession and still only scored one goal.

I am never wrong about this football club.Just days ago i said CMS was awful against Hull.My family made me a copy of what John Byrne said on bbc radio sussex last night.CMS was awful against Hull,"his words 100% the same as mine."Only ex-players or people that work in the game really know it.
PS: I'm an ex-player - does that mean I'm lucky enough to have your deep level of knowledge of the game?
Because I've played against him and chatted with him after the game. He was a top player and was a really, really nice bloke but he's in the Alan Shearer/Robbie Savage mould of insightful pundit, rather than the Gary Neville.
"The only one with delusion is you" says the man who claims (a) to know everyone in the game, and (b) is never wrong about the club. Hilarious, if quite sad.
