Charlie Oatway has urged Albion to build on a “fantastic” win at Championship leaders Cardiff when they return to The Amex.

Last night’s 2-0 win in Wales has lifted the Seagulls to within two points of the play-offs ahead of home games against Burnley on Saturday and Huddersfield a week later.

First team coach Oatway told The Argus: “It should give us a lift to crack on with the last dozen games or so we have got left, gain as many points as we can and see if it gets us in the shake-up at the end.

“We have got two home games now in the next couple of weeks so if we can get six points and see where it takes us then.”

Goals at the end of both halves by Andrea Orlandi and Leo Ulloa and an outstanding display by keeper Tomasz Kuszczak upset the table-toppers.

Oatway said: “It’s a fantatic result for us. Cardiff have been up there virtually from day one this season so for anyone to come here and get any points is a fantastic achievement.

“It takes some doing. We rode our luck at times and Tomasz made some good saves. We played some good football but we knew they were going to throw everything at us, especially when we went 1-0 up, but the boys were magnificent in the way they went about their business defensively.

“There are a lot of pats on the back because I think Cardiff are going to be untouchable. I don’t think they are going to be caught.”

Top scorer Craig Mackail-Smith missed the match with a knee injury. Dean Hammond also limped off in the second half with a knee problem, which gives Albion a headache in the defensive midfield role after Liam Bridcutt picked up his tenth booking, ruling him out of the next two games.

Captain Gordon Greer, sidelined again following a hamstring tear, is expected to be fit for Burnley’s visit and Ashley Barnes will be available after completing a three-match ban.
