Labour candidate slams recent Budget

9:57am Wednesday 3rd April 2013

LABOUR'S parliamentary candidate for Thurrock Polly Billington has responded to the Chancellor’s recent Budget.

She said: “Thanks for the penny off a pint Chancellor, but it’ll just make the hangover bigger in the morning.

“George Osborne didn’t give us anything else to cheer about. With prices rising faster than wages he could have helped people on modest incomes. But instead he’s gone ahead with a tax cut for millionaires.

“Even increasing the amount of money people keep before they get taxed means hundreds of pounds back for the richest, but only 32p a week for a family in the minimum wage, they lose because the benefits they receive – even while working – get clawed back.

“Unless we ease the squeeze on middle and low income families, we won’t get the economy out of the terrible mess this Government has made.

“We should get Britain working with a jobs guarantee for the long term unemployed.”
