Nathan Jones hailed Albion's 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon in Segovia tonight as a good learning curve.

Oscar Garcia's assistant head coach was pleased with the result and the manner of Leo Ulloa's late winner from a corner against a Sporting side who had the ball for long spells.

Oscar used 21 players, including six of last season's development squad. It would have been seven but Jake Forster-Caskey was a late withdrawal from the starting line-up due to a minor twinge.

Jones said: "It was a good test. We wanted that test, their style of possession, and we have learnt a lot.

"It's still pre-season. We're really pleased with the win. The set stuff play we worked on yesterday came off with a great finish (by Ulloa).

"We are still working on things and we came up against a very good side. To have won it is very pleasing but we have learnt a lot, which is the main thing.

"We would have liked to have been fantastic in possession but this is pre-season with a mixed team, chopping and changing.

"Sometimes it's difficult to get a bit of rythmn but we are very pleased with the result and the week we've had.

"Now we go back to England, we have got two days rest and then we prepare for Crawley and the other games coming up. It's an interesting time and one that we relish."

Jones was disappointed that the Spanish referee sent-off 20-year-old Rohan Ince for two bookable offences.

"These things can get handled a lot better," said the Welshman. "It's not as if he would have had an assessoor here. He could have handled a lot of other things better.

"The standard of refereeing was something we would expect to be slightly better but it's all a test - of your discipline, of other things.

"We won't always come up against that quality of opposition in terms of in possession, so it's been a good test all-round."
