Albion have MK Dons centre-half Shaun Williams in their sights as another possible replacement for Adam El-Abd.

The Seagulls have already targeted experienced Northern Ireland international Chris Baird to compensate for El-Abd's departure to Bristol City last week.

Now the versatile Williams has emerged as an alternative and potentially more cost-effective solution, although Albion face competition for his services from Championship rivals Millwall.

The 27-year-old Dubliner made his name in Ireland as an attacking midfielder but has operated mainly in the centre of defence since joining MK Dons from Sporting Fingal three years ago.

Albion assistant head coach Nathan Jones said this morning: "I don't want to speak about someone else's player until he has actually put pen to paper and signed for Brighton and Hove Albion.

"Shaun Williams is an MK Dons player, so I wouldn't want to comment on that."

Albion signed second choice left-back Adam Chicksen from League One MK Dons in the summer.

See Nathan has latched on to the latest Football Managers' clichés to smokescreen about players
I wonder just how much influence he has on signings? Are the players we have had so far more his choices than O.G.'s?. More than Burke's even? (Admittedly O.G. won't know many English players.)
Perhaps MBTS will enlighten me?

I believe Ward was a Striker before Wolves moved him to left back, and now we may get a midfielder who has moved to central defence playing behind Ince who has moved into midfield from central defence.
Looking a bit Dutch.

I'm getting a bit fed up reading about targets. I would much rather read about signings. Not that I want signings for the sake of them. I just get a bit concerned that our targets become our competitors' targets also.
Let's get the business done first and then shout about it after.
It doesn't make sense to me to alert our rivals of our targets. UTA

He's the assistant coach, why would you think he has more say on signings than burke and OG? Isn't it plainly obvious that he's no higher than third out of those three when it comes to signings? Or are you getting confused because he speaks more often to the media?

And yeah, lets see what MBTS reckons.

It's clear that OG does not have anything to do with signings beyond identifying types of player and positions to Barber and Burke, (and Bloom, we would hope).

It's pretty obvious that we're not out to splash a lot of cash in this transfer window unless we receive some first. Personally, i'd like to see us cash in on Bridcutt and Buckley as LB wants away, and WB looks past his best after all his injuries, and i feel is over-valued by Poyet.

Barber, Burke, Bloom, Bridcutt, Buckley - a lot of B's in my post and, some might say, Bull**** !

When I order something off the menu in a restaurant, is it my choice or the Chefs?
If Gus, who has worked in English football for many years, cannot do the job of finding targets for his team at Sunderland, as he has said, why do we expect Oscar to be doing it here?
I think it is always Oscars choice, but maybe Oscar chooses to have what the Chef recommends sometimes.

According to Sky he's bagged ten goals in all competitions this season, off 33 appearances. That's a pretty good conversion rate for a centre back and it would make him our leading goalscorer! Must be a good target for corners and set pieces. Let's not knock him until we know a little more eh?

WTF!! I getting the feeling that we're are operating more and more like Trotters Independent Traders and we've got a bargain hunting Del boy in charge. If this guys been playing in Div 2 for the last three years and no-one else has come in for him, doesn't that say a lot about him? As for a Millwall interest, Holloway operates on the same principle as Redknapp - buy as many as possible and hope 1 can play, so expect to see him linked to a few more in the next few days.
For Gods sake Albion get it together

Clearly for some of our fans, signing PL players who we have all heard of is the only thing that will satisfy them. For me it is much better to find hidden gems in the lower leagues or from abroad. Some players mature later in their careers. The only way we will get players from the PL is if they are at the end of their careers (like Upson & Bridge) or if they are youngsters with limited experience (Obika).

Williams is younger then El Abd, was their player of the season last year, can play in various positions and scores goals. MK Dons play a passing style of football similar to us. As a replacement for El Abd that looks like a step forward, and he might well be capable of more. By the way, one reason he scores so many is that he is generally the club penalty taker, so also a part replacement for Barnes !!

Perhaps some on here might remember the Manchester City legend Tony Book?
Now where did he come from, how old was he, and what position did he generally play in?
Oh yes, football has moved on since then, but the principles behind spotting and purchasing talent from wherever, remain the same.
This latest prospect looks good to me. He is versatile, which is what the modern game demands, and he can most certainly play well.
Do we really care, know, or even want to know who decides the club's transfer targets? Isn't it all about continuing the overall improvements that have been in place for some years now?

Good morning one and all.

I see that we have the usual mixed comments about this latest potential signing, but then I guess that nothing less than signing John Terry will please some of the contributors, and even he would be too old for some.
Weighing up our needs and balancing them off against what he would bring to the club, he seems like a good fit to me.

So many have said we need to look in the lower leagues to uncover a gem (and have used Zamora and Peter Ward as examples) and yet when the club actually do that, it is still wrong.

Then you say "no-one else has come in for him" and "As for a Millwall interest" - well, which is it? You managed to contradict yourself in consecutive sentences.

Do any of you recall all those that were banging on about how wrong it would be to sign Ulloa, a striker that no one had heard of playing in the second tier of Spanish football, and costing 2 million to boot. Oh how some people change.

Then you say "no-one else has come in for him" and "As for a Millwall interest" - well, which is it? You managed to contradict yourself in consecutive sentences.

Who would YOU go for as a replacement for El-Abd?
Do any of you recall all those that were banging on about how wrong it would be to sign Ulloa, a striker that no one had heard of playing in the second tier of Spanish football, and costing 2 million to boot. Oh how some people change.
Yeah :-) Burke's really been bitten on the backside with that one, hasn't he?

I don't see any resolution to this possible deal until tomorrow, the suits of Millwall, and manager, will not be at their ground until this evening so no talks with the lad until they get back from their trip, unless they are negotiating via the phone.

A well made point Joel'sGrandad. However it looks as if Nathan was responding to a question about Shaun Williams rather than giving out information. Wouldn't be surprised if the agent isn't behind the rumour and is simply trying to stimulate the market. Mark you the rumour may have some foundation. If it does then it makes a change that we might be considering a defender in his mid to late 20s rather than 30s.
I see that Cardiff have signed another forward from Molde. I hope that increases our chances of getting Conway back.

It's always disappointing when a manager takes players from his previous club (Gus and Bridcutt, OGS and this fella from Molde) as it appears to show a lack of knowledge of the market. Yes, he knows the player and what he is capable of, but it still seems more like a comfort blanket.

As to, what will I do, it's not for a week, it's for 24 hours that will encompass our next match after Sunday's deadline. I think Nathan was really only responding with a no comment.
My gripe was that we have been given details of a potential signing by the Argus and that could eventually scupper the deal. I suppose it doesn't really matter because there are other news sources and it's a race to get there first.
My mood wasn't helped either by the fact it was chucking it down outside.

He went on to become a Liverpool legend and England player.

Falmer Wizard since you have raised the question Of Crawley I wonder if the reported £400,000 offer for Walsh which Crawley rejected from "a Championship club" was an approach from the Albion. ? It that were the case perhaps we have now moved on to Williams. Complete speculation on my part of course.
Quite impressed that Williams has scored 10 goals (9 in the league) for MK Dons this season as a CB. Even if he does take penalties it's still more than any Albion player has achieved so far this season.

Slightly disappointed in the lack of transfer activity in players arriving at the club. Unless there's something happening I this week's transfer window thats up the club's sleeve, then I think promotion could be out this season.
