Cinematic is a word often used to describe Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory’s music. A one-off event took this to its logical conclusion with promos from the new album and a captivating live performance broadcast simultaneously to screens across the globe.

Written and directed by the charismatic singer’s partner, Nowhere Boy editor Lisa Gunning, the first section showcased songs from sixth record Tales Of Us. Following familiar themes of nature, femininity and sexuality, Gunning’s shorts made for a polished half-hour of dreamlike meandering.

Highlights included the Jacques Brel-inspired beach liaison Stranger and the blithely transgressive woodland frolic of Annabel, though the centerpiece was the intimate, folk-inspired set from Goldfrapp herself and a group of note-perfect musicians.

Perhaps more civilized than attending a gig in person, close-ups and the curious experience of viewing a projection of a projection on the pseudo-industrial Thea offered a better view than you’d get at any show.

The level of directorial control over haunting live numbers filtered the essence of a polished documentary into that unbeatable feeling of actually “being there” for a satisfying slant on the tour movie.
