Quiet man Christian Walton has been told he would benefit from a stint away from the Amex.

But, as the junior member of Albion’s goalkeeping triumvirate prepares for international action, one of his club colleagues has declared: “He’s an unbelievable prospect.”

Walton, who turns 19 in November, started tonight's England under-20s game against Romania at Telford.

He has yet to sample first team action with the Seagulls, although he was on the bench against Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the season.

But he has been shown the ropes by senior colleagues David Stockdale and Casper Ankergren.

And Stockdale, who joined the club in the summer, likes what he sees.

The former Fulham man said: “He’s a very good goalkeeper, I’m very impressed with him.

“Me and Casper try to help him in good ways – and bad! It’s hard for him because he’s not playing.

“Hopefully he can learn from us goalkeeping wise. We’re a bit crazy as well so we don’t want him to learn too much from that! But we’re there for him if he needs any help.”

Stockdale has had eight separate loan stints in all at seven different clubs and he reckons something similar could benefit Walton.

The youngster is a mature figure out on the pitch but could struggle for game-time at the Amex this term.

Stockdale said: “I can’t say anything about him playing in matches because I haven’t actually seen him.

“But, from what I’ve seen in training, he looks a great prospect for his age.

“He’s unbelievable. He has got everything ahead of him so a bit of patience is needed at the moment. He needs to get out on loan and play some games.

“Everyone has done it. Even if he goes down to League One or League Two, just to get some games and show everyone what he can do.”

Stockdale admits he and Anekrgren enjoy a joke off the pitch.

And he reckons that can rub off on Walton and make him a little more comfortable in the senior changing room.

He added: “Christian’s a quiet lad and we just try to bring him out of his shell. He’s 19 years old in the first team changing room. I was quiet when I was his age! He’s a big fella and he’s not quiet on the training pitch.

“Off the pitch he is a quiet lad but I think everyone is at that age.

“The changing room is a hard place to be as a youngster, especially when there’s me and Casper in there shouting and a few of the older lads as well.”

Rolando Aarons of Newcastle is suddenly the star attraction in the England squad after opening his Premier League account against Crystal Palace last Saturday.

Tonight’s game is the first under new coach Aidy Boothroyd and kicks off a season which culminates in the Toulon tournament.
