Gordon Greer is facing a two-from-three battle to face the world champions.

But the Albion skipper is confident he can make the huge step up from league football if he starts for Scotland against Germany.

Greer and fellow Championship centre-backs Russell Martin (Norwich) and Grant Hanley (Blackburn) are vying for two places in Gordon Strachan’s side in tomorrow’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Dortmund.

Sources north of the border expect Strachan to give Hanley and Brighton-born Martin the nod, leaving Greer as first back-up on the bench.

But Greer insisted: “All you can do is give your all.

“Germany have some of the best players in the world but the Championship is a strong league and since I've been with Scotland we have worked so hard and the spirit is terrific.”

Greer impressed in the Scots’ last away trip, when they won 1-0 in Norway.

He also made a fine start to the Seagulls’ current campaign, apart from the moment he was outwitted by Charlton’s Igor Vetokele last Saturday.

Strachan said: “There is competition in that area because they all know the system we want to use and they have all done well.

“Martin and Hanley have progressed as a partnership and Greer has stepped in and done well.”

Meanwhile Greer’s fellow Albion centre-back Aaron Hughes is expected to feature for Northern Ireland in Hungary.

Hughes is one of several survivors from his nation’s last away win in a qualifier, against Slovenia four years ago.

Albion’s players not involved in internationals are enjoying a weekend off during the break in league fixtures.
