Gordon Greer believes Albion are in a false position in the Championship.
But the skipper admits they need a return to winning ways, starting against Cardiff at the Amex tomorrow night.
The 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest knocked the hosts off the top of the table and moved Albion up a place to 17th but it also stretched their league run without a win to five matches.
Greer told The Argus: “I think we have done better than where we are in the table but at the end of the season you cannot make excuses.
“We need to start winning games. I though we were unfortunate (at Forest) but we will give it our all on Tuesday and hopefully we can get a win then.”
Greer has marshalled a defence which has kept a hat-trick of clean sheets in all competitions and conceded only twice in four games since a reckless 3-2 defeat at Brentford.
He said: “We were far too open in that game and we have highlighted that game a lot. We have tried to work on it in training and since then we have been a lot more compact and defended a lot better, which we need as a platform to build on.”
Craig Noone will be back at the Amex with Cardiff tomorrow night. The former Albion winger made his first home appearance since a long-term groin injury in the Welshmen’s 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday.
