Aaron Hughes wants to be part of a Northern Ireland squad who go down in folklore.

The Albion defender played the full 90 minutes as his country went top of their qualifying group for Euro 2016.

They have six points from two games after a 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands at Windsor Park but face a tough test in Greece tomorrow.

Hughes, who won his 92nd cap, said: “Northern Ireland has waited a long time for an opportunity.

“We've never qualified for the Euros and our last World Cup was in 1986.

“Those were teams that everyone remembers and it would be nice to be in a team everyone talks about.”

Hughes is now third on Northern Ireland's all-time list of cap winners, behind Pat Jennings (119) and David Healey (95).

He admitted: “As a kid I always dreamt of playing for Northern Ireland and now I'm third on the list.

“It has gone in the blink of an eye and I'm honoured to be there. But the priority is qualifying.”

Paddy McCourt went on as sub for the Irish on 67 minutes with the game starting to fizzle out.

Gordon Greer was an unused sub for Scotland as they beat Georgia 1-0 while goalkeeper Christian Walton helped England under-20s beat hosts Holland 3-2 in a four-team tournament in Heerenveen.

England play Turkey today but boss Adie Boothroyd, who has taken three goalkeepers for the three games, is likely to rotate his squad.
