Lewis Dunk’s fifth goal of the season earned Albion a morale-boosting point in a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield.

The Seagulls’ unlikely top scorer fired home a corner in the 38th-minute to cancel out an early opener from the hosts.

Albion’s winless run in the Championship now stands at nine games and they will be without Kazenga LuaLua for Saturday’s visit of Rotherham after he was sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offence.

However, boss Sami Hyypia will take heart from a display where Albion finished the stronger team.

When the opening goal came it was all too easy for Huddersfield as Sean Scannell fed Tommy Smith and Jacob Butterfield met the full-back’s low cross with a shot which hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down over the line.

Albion’s response was positive although it took them until the 22nd minute to register an attempt at goal, Chris O’Grady’s header from Gary Gardner’s cross being a comfortable take for Alex Smithies.

However, they were rewarded on 38 minutes with an equaliser from Dunk – their seventh goal out of 12 in the Championship by defender this season.

Danny Holla’s corner from the left was knocked down and Dunk pounced to fire home via the crossbar.

Albion were good value for parity at half-time, although they needed a fine stop from David Stockdale just before the break to keep out a stinging effort from Harry Bunn.

Early in the second half Stockdale did well again, this time pushing away a fierce drive from left-back Jack Robinson.

Hyypia made a double change with 18 minutes remaining in search of a winner, Adrian Colunga and Rohan Ince replacing O’Grady and Holla.

Jake Forster-Caskey had the ball in the net with seven minutes remaining but an offside flag cut short his celebrations.

Then with two minutes remaining a powerful shot from distance by Colunga was tipped on to the bar and over for a corner by Smithies.

It was a good finish by Albion and former Seagull Joel Lynch almost turned Inigo Calderon’s cross into his own net.

However, there was one final twist when LuaLua picked up a second yellow for a foul on Connor Coady in stoppage time.
