Albion boss Chris Hughton is still weighing up his options in the January transfer window.

The Seagulls’ 2015 business has been limited up to now to recapturing Greg Halford on loan from Nottingham Forest for the rest of the season following Hughton’s New Year’s Eve appointment.

The former Norwich chief is keeping a cool head, with another 19 days for Albion to add to their squad.

His main targets remain an experienced central midfielder and striker but he has played down speculation linking him to a reunion with ex-Newcastle target man Shola Ameobi.

Hughton told The Argus: “We are still waiting for things to fall into place. It’s obviously difficult when you come in late.

“Although you have a good insight into certain players, until you know you are going somewhere you cannot assess the squad.

“That is what I am having to do, assess what we’ve got. Fortunately for us at the moment we are on the back of three wins and two draws, which gives you a little bit of leeway to make sure that you make the right decisions.

“It’s still very much a case of looking at the possibilities.”

Ameobi, 33, is back at Newcastle receiving treatment for an ankle injury ahead of a possible move to MLS, after quitting Turkish club Gaziantep.

Ameobi scored 11 goals in 21 games when Hughton’s Toon won the Championship in 2009-10.

Hughton said: “You never say but it is one that is only being mentioned because of the association.”

Meanwhile, Albion have no fresh injury concerns for Hughton’s first home game in charge against Brentford on Saturday.

The only absentees are long-term victims Andrew Crofts, Dale Stephens, Kazenga LuaLua and Kemy Agustien.
