Albion boss Chris Hughton admits he is still searching for the right formula to end the away goal famine.

Hughton was satisfied with a 0-0 draw at next-to-bottom Millwall last night which edged the Seagulls eight points clear of the Championship relegation zone with eight games to go.

The result means they have now scored only once – from the penalty spot – in a winless six-match run away from home, despite Hughton pairing Leon Best with Craig Mackail-Smith up front against the Lions.

Hughton told The Argus: “We absolutely came here to get a win, hence the reason why I played two up top.

“We’ve found it difficult to get the goals we’ve needed and I felt playing two up front would give us a little bit more of a platform but we probably needed to play better than we did.

“We’ve certainly played better than that. I can’t say it was a performance that deserved a win. We were up against a new manager (Neil Harris) with a group of players you knew he would revitalise and it’s away from home.

“A couple of other results have gone for us as well so in the scheme of things it’s probably a decent result.

“You don’t get the volume of time on the training ground you would like, playing at the weekend and midweek but you just keep looking for the right formula. We didn’t find it but it doesn’t mean we won’t find it on another day.”

Former Celtic midfielder Beram Kayal is an early concern for Saturday’s game at Blackburn after going off at half-time.

Hughton said: “He took a whack so he was sore and he was hobbling for a while but he has also played a lot of games since coming here after not playing anywhere near as regularly in the last two years so it probably didn’t do him any harm to come off.”
