NIGERIAN soccer was thrown into confusion today after former Scotland coach Berti Vogts failed to arrive to take charge of the national team.

The Nigeria FA said Vogts, who was initially scheduled to fly in on Tuesday for his first day in his new role, postponed his flight for "personal reasons".

But local reports said Vogts, who signed a four-year contract in early February, scrapped the journey because he had not been paid three months' salary upfront.

The NFA said Vogts, who is on £25,000-a-month, has been paid and is expected to set a new arrival date soon.

"There is no problem. The money was wired to his account in Germany on Monday," said NFA official Tunde Aderibigbe.

Nigeria's sports chiefs have often fallen out with their national team coaches over failure to pay wages but local league sponsor, telecoms firm Globacom, has agreed to pay the German's bills.

Vogts was expected to take over the Super Eagles three weeks ahead of Nigeria's 2008 Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Uganda on March 24. FIFA president Sepp Blatter today said that the 2018 World Cup Finals could be held in North America or Asia as easily as in Europe.
