NORTH Lanarkshire Council is to do its bit to help tackle climate change.

Council bosses have signed a declaration saying they will work with government to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

They must now examine every aspect of their operations including energy use, travel and transport, waste production, and procurement of goods and services to reduce the authority's impact on the environment.

Council chief executive Gavin Whitefield said the need for the declaration was immediate and urgent.

He added: "Climate change is not just a future threat. It is a reality now.

"Scotland is already feeling the effects of climate change - temperatures have risen and rainfall has dramatically increased.

"Current indications are we can expect our weather to become even more extreme, with up to 90% less snowfall, rising sea levels and increased risk of flooding."
