TRAVELLING by train is the most expensive way to get around, Holiday Which? warned today.
A study of trips from Glasgow to London by train, plane and coach found the train was consistently the most expensive way to get around - almost £40 more than the next most expensive alternative.
Over a seven-week period covering November and December 2006, the magazine compared plane, train and coach tickets from London to Glasgow for travel departing December 15 and returning on December 17.
Holiday Which? said for London to Glasgow, the cheapest one-way rail ticket was £13.50 - but the magazine had found it impossible to get this fare.
For six of the seven weeks surveyed, the best fare available was the super advance return at £77.
In the seventh week, a fare of £72 return was found with East Coast Main Line operator GNER.
The best airfare for London to Glasgow was found in week three of the survey - £37.67 from Stansted with Ryanair.
The cheapest one-way London to Glasgow coach fare was £22.50.
Holiday Which? editor Lorna Cowan said: "Look at prices carefully when you buy your ticket as sometimes you won't necessarily be offered the lowest price. For example, two singles tickets are often cheaper than a return."
