SCOTTISH Water today revealed 26,000 homes and businesses were in danger of being left high and dry after a major burst in Rutherglen.

Just 1000 customers were left without water after engineers successfully switched vital supplies in a massive operation following a burst underground mains in the town.

The fractured 18in main was immediately isolated and supplies re-routed after the burst happened shortly before 11am yesterday.

Workmen were sent to investigate suspicions of an underground leak near the busy junction of Glasgow Road and Main Street. They dug up the road and found the mains encased in concrete.

But workmen unwittingly made the leak worse when they removed concrete prior to a detailed inspection.

A Scottish Water spokeswoman said: "We apologise to customers. A thousand phoned to say they were left without water. But it could have been a lot worse.

"Frankly 26,000 customers could have been without water. We had to re-route supplies. The guys did a great job."
