EMERGENCY work to fix a gas leak on a busy city centre road is not expected to finish until the weekend.

A section of Ingram Street in Glasgow's Merchant City has been closed for more than a fortnight due to the problem.

A leak was discovered on February 24 near the junction with Brunswick Street.

Maintenance firm Scotland Gas Networks traced it to a main and dug up a large section of the road.

SGN spokeswoman Sharon Miller-McKenzie said the problem was more complicated than expected, and specialist contractors had to be brought in.

Several metres of pipe are now being replaced and the section is not expected to reopen until Saturday or Sunday.

One nearby resident said: "There's been this awful smell of gas for the last fortnight and nobody seems to know what's going on. We thought the work was only going to take a few days but it's dragged on for more than two weeks."

Ms Miller-McKenzie said: "We apologise for any inconvenience to motorists or residents.

"The work was a lot more complicated than expected and we've been on site every day. We had to excavate parts of the road so the gas could escape, but there have been no safety concerns."
