GLASGOW certainly did its bit to help win the Second World War, and never more so than in Wings For Victory week in the summer of 1943.

The week capitalised on the city's enduring fascination with aircraft by bringing war planes right in to George Square so the public could take a really good look.

And it paid of handsomely. The event was a major fundraiser to boost the coffers of the RAF, and so many Glaswegians crowded into the square and bought special war bonds that more than £16million was raised, smashing the city's target by nearly £3million.
