Inigo Calderon has been voted player of the season by Albion fans.

He topped the poll with a big majority, suggesting supporters want him to stay next season.

But former winner Adam Virgo has cast doubt over whether Calderon should be awarded a new deal.

The long-serving Spaniard led the poll with 37 per cent of the votes.

It put him well clear of top-scoring centre-half Lewis Dunk on 24 per cent.

Right-back turned right-sided midfielder Calderon is out of contract at the end of the season.

Virgo, who landed the prize in 2004-05 after he was converted from a central defender into a goalscoring centre-forward, told The Argus: “It's a difficult one with him, because the club have got to get it right on the pitch and forget about sentiment.

“He is a massive fans’ favourite. Do I think his performances over the course of the season warrant a new contract? Probably not. Does he deserve one for everything he has done for the club? Yes.

“I think he is struggling with his fitness playing out wide right now. I think they have got to be quite ruthless this summer and do what is best for the club, not necessarily for the individual.”

Calderon, 33, has been a regular since Chris Hughton took charge. Fellow defensive veterans Bruno and captain Gordon Greer were given one-year extensions in December by former boss Sami Hyypia.

Virgo said: “I’m for having some experienced players around you. Calde will be thinking ‘Those two have been given an extra year, I deserve one too’.

“The other side of it is if they have got a right-back in mind who is at a good age and could bring more to the team then I think Calde is in trouble. Bruno offers more overall at right-back and in midfield.”

Injured Liverpool loan signing Joao Teixeira, third in the poll, was named young player of the season at the awards dinner at the Amex last night.

Rohan Ince won goal of the season for his volley at Swindon and forward Fliss Gibbons women’s player of the season.

Jay Brynin fan of the season went to the late Sarah Watts, the Sarah Watts inspiration award to matchday crowd doctor Rob Galloway and the Albion In The Community contribution award to powerchair player Matt Francis.
