Albion boss Chris Hughton insists there must be no let-up in the last two games, even though his team are safe.

Millwall’s 2-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers last night means the Seagulls will be playing Championship football again next season.

Millwall can still finish level with them on points but Albion’s massive goal difference advantage of minus eight against minus 32 makes them uncatchable barring a mathematical miracle.

A relieved Hughton is still demanding maximum effort from his players against automatic promotion chasers Watford at the Amex on Saturday and Middlesbrough away on the final day to end a miserable season on a high and send fans into the summer break in brighter mood.

Hughton told The Argus: “We have two very tough games. The aim now is to finish with as many points as we can.

“Certainly there will be no change of emphasis going into Saturday’s game, irrespective of Millwall’s result, for a couple of reasons.

“Mathematically we are not done and also we have to be respectful that we are playing two teams that are fighting at the top.

“You have to do it properly for ourselves. We are on the back of a very disappointing result at Wigan. The best thing we can do now is to try to improve on that and bounce back with a result.

“And also it’s the last home game. There will be a great atmosphere in the stadium and we would like to finish with a home win.”

Albion’s survival represents first mission accomplished for Hughton, who took over on New Year’s Eve when they were outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

The second is to ensure the club do not find themselves in the same hole again and are back pushing at the right end of the table next season.

He said: “The club has been through a reasonably rapid rise, getting promotion under Gus (Poyet) and then two seasons of play-offs.

“By those standards this has been a very disappointing season. The aim is to be able to compete again to try to get into those play-offs.”
