Albion's towering new Finn Vahid Hambo says he is no Zlatan Ibrahimovic - but he is no slouch either.

The Seagulls have added 6ft 4in Hambo to their striker ranks from Finnish top flight club FC Inter Turku on a two-year contract, subject to international clearance.

The prolific 20-year-old of Bosnian descent has been dubbed ‘The Finnish Zlatan’ after the Swedish and PSG star, due to their similar backgrounds, looks, height and playing style.

Hambo has played down the comparison but the Finland under-21 international is intent on causing a stir at the Amex by working his way into first team contention via the development team.

Hambo said: “I’m a tall player, so people may think I am slow and cannot do much with the ball, but my technique is good and I’m pretty fast, so I hope that I can surprise a lot of people.

“It’s quite funny that people compare me to Zlatan because we’re both tall and strikers, but I don’t compare myself to him or anyone else.

“I’m now focused on achieving success, firstly to improve myself in the under-21s and then in the first team. I believe that everything is in place for the club to play in the Premier League.”

Hambo spent two years in Italy in Sampdoria’s academy before returning to Finland, where he started out with HJK Helsinki. He joined Inter Turku this year from Ilves and has been banging in goals both for them and the national under-21s.

He has scored 14 goals in 13 games in the domestic league, which runs from April to October, and three in two appearances for his country.

Hambo admitted: “I didn’t know a lot about Brighton. All I knew was that Sami Hyypia was the manager last season and Antti Niemi was the goalkeeping coach, and I was also aware that another Finnish player, Niki Maenpaa, had just joined.

“But now, after seeing the training ground, I can say that these facilities are among the best I have ever seen, everything is new here and so good.

“It will also be great to see the new stadium and I cannot wait to have the opportunity to play here.”

Hambo’s Albion debut in the under-21s will be delayed while he recovers from a minor ankle injury.
