Gordon Greer will lead Albion into battle again this season.

Boss Chris Hughton has confirmed to The Argus the Scottish international centre-half will be captain.

It will be Greer’s sixth season in succession leading the Seagulls, with Spaniards Inigo Calderon and Bruno continuing to step in when needed.

Hughton revealed: “I have no plans to change the captaincy at all. Generally when GG hasn’t been available it’s been Calde, then Bruno.

“With those three you are looking at experienced, established players here, so they are always high up.”

Greer returned from injury for just over an hour in last night’s 2-1 friendly win at Gillingham. It was a tough workout for the Scot against Gillingham striker Luke Norris, who was denied twice in the first half by impressive keeper Niki Maenpaa.

Hughton said: “It was a real test for him (Greer) against a really strong boy.

"Niki is an experienced keeper and he is very vocal.”

Former Gillingham midfielder Andrew Crofts, ruled out since October by a second serious knee injury in the space of ten months, was saved from a reunion with his old club in order to be eased back into action in the under-21s against the Nike Academy at the Lancing training complex today.

Hughton said: “We have got to make sure we follow the correct procedures as regards his time out. He has done all of the pre-season. The good news is he’s had no issues with the injury.

“As regards him returning that’s a definite but he is a bit behind the others, only because of us following the correct protocol and making sure he is happy with everything.”
