David Stockdale reckons he can help Albion stay in with a shout of promotion – if he keeps on opening his mouth.

The in-form keeper roars instructions to team-mates, even when they are unnecessary, to maintain concentration.

Stockdale had little to do against Blackburn at the Amex last Saturday in-between three key saves, two of them in one-on-one situations.

Boss Chris Hughton highlighted his contribution to the second successive 1-0 home win for the Seagulls.

Yorkshireman Stockdale told The Argus: “You can’t work on concentration. You can’t go outside and train and say ‘We’re not going to do ‘owt for ten minutes and then I’m going to come and shoot at you’.

“It’s a real tough one. It’s like decision-making, through balls. For goalkeepers match fitness is when a through ball comes and you have to get the right positioning.

“When you have been injured or at the start of pre-season you don’t really feel that. It takes a while. It’s not something you can work on.

“It’s just about trying to keep yourself in the game all the time. You’ll see me probably shouting at a few people and you’ll think ‘Why is he shouting?’ “Basically it’s to keep concentration. It might be telling someone to mark and they turn around and say ‘I am!’ “Different people have different ways and mine’s shouting at people. The lads know it. It helps anyway.”

Stockdale will not be shouting the odds if Albion pull off a result against Ipswich, one of his former club’s, in today’s table-topping clash at Portman Road.

He had a loan spell at Ipswich from Fulham four years ago but was recalled early due to injury problems at his parent club.

Stockdale did not go overboard when Albion won at Fulham this month with a late penalty. It will be the same story at Ipswich.

He said: “That was respect for the club that brought me out of League Two, that gave me a chance.

“It will be the same on Saturday. They’ve showed me a lot of respect when I’ve been there.

“Some clubs you’ve been at you might have had a hard time and proved people wrong but Fulham wasn’t one and Ipswich isn’t another so I won’t be jumping around like a maniac.

“It’s a special club. I did really well, the fans really took to me. I loved my time there. Unfortunately I got called back early but it’s a great club with a great history.

“I’m looking forward to going back and hopefully it’s a bit like Fulham. I go back see everyone and we nick the points.”

Stockdale will wear specially-produced gloves bearing the names of Shoreham Airshow disaster victims Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt.

Nike and specialist retailer Just Keepers have provided the gloves bearing the Christian names of the pair of Worthing United team-mates.

Grimstone was a groundsman at Albion’s Lancing training complex, Schilt a Seagulls supporter.

Stockdale, who visited Grimstone’s family earlier this week, will also wear a special warm-up top in memory of the duo.

Then he hopes a defence, still with Lewis Dunk as an option after he ended the saga over his future by signing a new five-year deal, will ensure the gloves are not warmed much by the Ipswich strikers.

Stockdale said: “As we have seen, Lewis is a £5 million rated centre-back (by Fulham). Hueney (Uwe Huenemeier) has come in and done brilliantly for us in the last two games.

“He’s nearly £2 million. And then you have got Connor (Goldson) who is a great acquisition for the long-term as well as now and then our club captain (Gordon Greer), consistent as ever and gives his all.

“We’ve got strength in depth and long may it continue. It’s not easy for the manager to pick our bench.”
