Albion under-21s progressed to the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup after beating Everton in a penalty shootout at Southport tonight.

The young Seagulls went through 4-2 on spot-kicks following an enthralling 2-2 draw, which included a stoppage time equaliser from Dylan Barnett to force extra time.

Substitute Jack Harper then put Albion ahead only for Everton to level.

Christian Walton, who made a number of fine stops during the evening, saved from Joe Williams in the shootout while Tom Davies missed.

Albion’s shootout scorers were Jayson Molumby, Tom Dallison, Harper and James Tilley.

In the opening four minutes Walton made good stops from Sam Byrne and Kieran Dowell.

However, it was Everton who went ahead five minutes before the break when Byrne firing home from the edge of the area.

Walton made another excellent save on 81 minutes, turning Matthew Pennington’s header around a post, and it proved crucial as the Seagulls drew level in stoppage time, Barnett heading home from a free-kick.

Again Walton came to Albion’s rescue five minutes into the first period of extra time, reacting superbly to turn a shot from Courtney Duffus around a post.

Harper then put Albion ahead from 20 yards on 99 minutes, only for Williams to level from a penalty four minutes later.

Right at the end of the first period of extra time the Seagulls had skipper Glen Rea sent off for two yellows in the space of a couple of minutes but the ten men held on to force penalties.
