Gordon Greer has described Albion as “a special place to be” as he signs off after six years as skipper.

The Scottish international defender has not been offered a new contract.

He heads off for friendlies against Italy and France facing a new challenge in club football – but proud of his time with the Seagulls.

The Argus:

Greer, who signed for Albion in the summer of 2010 (pictured above), said: “When I look back on my time with the club, I just smile.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with some fantastic managers and some great players during my time here, and I have been so proud to be captain during that time.

“I’m not on social media as I’m quite a private person, so I don’t get to speak to the fans as much as some of the other lads. So this is a great opportunity for me to say 'Thank you' to the supporters.

“Ever since I’ve been here the fans have been great and they have been behind us through the good times and the bad times. They’re the heartbeat of the club.

“I also want to say thanks to all the staff that you see day in, day out. The kitmen, the media team, the chefs in the canteen, the physio department, the people in the offices. Everyone who makes the club such a special place to be.”

The first captain to lead Albion out at the Amex

Greer admitted he left on a disappointing note as Albion missed out narrowly on promotion.

But he said: “There have been a lot of great memories but some obviously stand out more than others.

“Winning the title at Withdean, the first game at the Amex when Bucko (Will Buckley) scored, Leo’s (Ulloa) winner at Nottingham Forest. There have been so many brilliant memories.

“We’ve had our ups and downs and just missing out on promotion this season was so disappointing. But I will definitely look back with fond memories.”
