Jiri Skalak has defended his decision take the plunge with Albion - and set his sights on another promotion push.

Skalak is gunning for champions Spain at Euro 2016 after being confirmed in the Czech Republic's squad of 23.

Now he has hit back at compatriots who questioned his decision to move to England's second tier in mid-season, rather than wait for potentially a more lucrative move if he caught the eye in the Euros.

Skalak gradually won over Albion fans after his deadline-beating switch from Mlada Boleslav.

He said: "Although in the beginning it was difficult, I have not regretted the move for a moment.

"Czech people have no idea what the second English division is like.

"I don't think you can compare the quality of the Championship with the Czech League.

"It's something completely different - in speed, strength and quality of the players.

"Stadiums, training facilities, the interest of fans - it is all on another level.

"In Mlada Boleslav there are good and smart players, but I still take my change as a step up.

"And I would never want to return."

Skalak featured in a 2-1 friendly win against Russia in Innsbruck last night and faces South Korea in Prague on Saturday.

The Czechs open their tournament against Spain in Toulouse.

But Skalak has allowed thoughts to drift to next season.

He said: "After a while last seadson, I started playing regularly in the side and the manager was pleased with me.

"I believe if we keep our players and bring in someone else, next season will be successful.

"But it will be very difficult because there is a lot of competition.

Every year it gets harder and harder."
