Albion boss Chris Hughton has admitted his side did not do enough against Reading's ten men as they were knocked out of the League Cup.

The Royals won the all-Championship third round tie 2-1 at the Amex, despite losing defender Tyler Blackett to a red card in the 41st minute for a tackle on Albion debutant Seb Pocognoli.

Skipper Stephen Quinn had volleyed the visitors ahead by then, as the Seagulls failed to clear a corner.

John Swift doubled the lead early in the second half, with Albion all at sea again, before sub Tomer Hemed gave them late hope of forcing extra-time.

Hughton made 11 changes following Saturday's 1-0 win at Burton but was still able to name a side full of experience and quality.

"We had a strong enough team," he told The Argus. "They started the game better than us with a better tempo.

"Amongst all of that you have got to make sure not to concede and both goals we conceded were poor.

"Against ten men you are going to have opportunities and we did, albeit from crosses and balls into the box, but we've got to make more of the dominance we had in the last period."
