Albion defender Connor Goldson has signed a new four-year contract.

The deal replaces the four-year contract he signed when Albion bought him from Shrewsbury for £600,000 two summers ago and runs until June 2020.

Goldson, 23, has not featured for the Seagulls in the Championship so far this season after damaging knee ligaments on a pre-season training camp in Tenerife.

Competition in the centre of defence has increased since then with the club record capture of Shane Duffy for £3.5 million from Blackburn Rovers but Goldson remains a big part of manager Chris Hughton's plans after an encouraging debut campaign.

Hughton said: "Connor had a great first season with us, and particularly in the second half of the campaign, when he was excellent.

"He has made great progress in his first year and earned his new deal. He thoroughly deserves it and I've no doubt he has a very bright future ahead with us.

"He has been a little bit unfortunate with injury at the start of the season, but he is back to full fitness now and ready to seize his opportunity."

Goldson had to wait until December for his debut before establishing a formidable partnership with Lewis Dunk.

The Wolverhampton-born stopper, voted young player of the season by the coaching staff, has made 30 appearances for Albion and scored two goals.
