David Stockdale has vowed to keep taking calculated risks with the ball at his feet.

The Albion goalkeeper has the backing of boss Chris Hughton to be Albion’s first passer as they look to play their way out of the Championship.

Stockdale produced two good saves late on to preserve his team’s very welcome 1-0 win over Wolves.

That came three days after he took responsibility for failing to control a tricky back pass from Bruno which gifted Jordan Hugill the opening goal in the 2-2 draw with Preston.

Stockdale said: “The manager knows what type of goalkeeper I am.

“Sometimes I take more risks than others but I can name a lot more times I’ve got out of it than I have made mistakes.

“If he wants me to stop playing like that, he will tell me and I’ll stop. When I’m under pressure I’m not stupid enough to start doing Cruyff turns in my six yard box.”

Albion aim for a third successive away win on Saturday when they visit a Wigan side who remain in the drop zone, despite an injury-time leveller at Leeds on Tuesday.

Stockdale said: “No one is struggling in this league. Anything can happen. We go with the same mindset – three points.

“If we play like we normally do and keep a clean sheet, we should come somewhere close.”
