Connor Goldson has revealed the moment he feared his season was over with Albion before it had begun.

The central defender makes his first Championship start of the campaign at Wigan tomorrow, deputising for the suspended Lewis Dunk.

That is a relief for Goldson, who was worried he might not play at all this season.

He hurt a knee just 48 hours into a trip to the Canary Islands which launched the Seagulls' summer preparations.

Fortunately for Goldson, it was medial ligaments rather than a repeat of the cruciate ligament damage which has sidelined team-mate Solly March since December.

Goldson said: "It was the right at the end of the second day of training in Tenerife. I went to block a cross and my standing leg gave way underneath me.

"I knew straight away. I felt my knee kind of snap. I was lucky that it was only six weeks and not longer, a six to 12-month injury.

"I am grateful for that but at the same time it put my season at a halt and it's just starting again really."

Goldson's partner in the north-west tomorrow is Shane Duffy (below left), whose arrival for a record fee has reduced his prospects of regular game time but done nothing to diminish his faith that he is at the right club to progress his career.

The Argus: That is why he is just signed a new contract, keeping him at the club for an extra 12 months until 2020.

Goldson told The Argus: "We spoke about it at the end of last season, so I always knew it was in the pipeline, then it happened last week. I got a phone call saying it was getting done.

"I was obviously happy to extend it. I think it's a brilliant club that is only going in one direction, so to commit myself for another four years is the right thing to do, even though I've not been playing.

"I know my chance will come. I might have to be patient and wait to break in again, like last season, but I'm 23 years old and there is only one reason to commit here for another four years.

"We've got a good manager, a great squad, and I'm happy to be here. Hopefully we can achieve what we all want and what I want - to get myself to the Premier League."
