Chris Hughton believes Albion can still improve – as they aim for top spot in the Championship.

The Seagulls will leapfrog Newcastle for a few hours at least if they beat in-form Leeds at the Amex tomorrow.

Hughton reckons his side have chiselled out results when not at their best recently, including coming from behind at home to Aston Villa and Fulham – but he would love to see them right back at their best.

The Albion boss told The Argus: “We have made life difficult for ourselves but that is the level of competition in the league.

“In some of the games we haven’t played at the level that we have in other periods. If we are not playing at our level and are still able to get a result that shows something about the character and belief in the side.

“I still think we can raise our level again.”

Hughton will urge Albion to be better in possession than a Leeds side flying after six wins from their last seven games.

He said: “We will have to be better than them on the ball. If we aren’t able to do that, then at least be able to have the breaks.

“Fulham were better than us in the first half and we needed something to happen to change it. Sam Baldock’s goal won us the game because that was the change in the game.

“We are going to have to have good moments with an end product. They will have good moments because they are a good side.”

Albion have taken four points from their last two home games after conceding soft goals at set-pieces.

Centre-back Shane Duffy said: “We didn’t start the best in the last two home games but we’ve been very good at home. It will probably be a similar game to Fulham and hopefully we keep it tight at the back because we’ve got enough quality to beat them.”
