They are the title-winning team-mates who have become promotion rivals.

Glenn Murray and Chris Wood will be leading their respective attacks tonight.

But, as the media spotlight falls on the Amex again, one of the men who will be broadcasting the game to the nation is intrigued as to how the two targetmen will compare.

On Albion’s side, the 33–year-old, 6ft 2in, 11-goal Cumbrian.

For Leeds, the 24-year-old, 6ft 3in, 13-goal New Zealander.

It is one of the sub-plots to enjoy with both centre-forwards going up against central defenders who are also earning rave reviews.

Murray congratulates Wood on an Albion goal

Sky Sports and Sky Bet analyst David Prutton will also be interested to see what sort of service Murray gets from out wide and whether Leeds, with a narrower formation, can cut off that supply line.

Murray and Wood were, along with Ashley Barnes, main men in the Albion team who won the League One title six seasons ago.

They both moved on that summer and both have scored goals back at the Amex for their subsequent teams.

Wood is enjoying perhaps his best season so far at the sharp end of a Leeds team just starting to believe this could be their year to regain Premier League status.

But Murray’s record at the Amex is extraordinary with 11 goals from nine starts.

Prutton said: “I’m looking forward to seeing Murray up against Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson. That is partly because Glenn is very clever but he also uses his physical size very well.

“He will be against Jansson who has taken to the Championship very well. Jansson is not just a big head it and kick it player, he is very thoughtful about his game and his positioning. He and Bartley are forming a good partnership.

“The thing with Glenn is that he doesn’t dress it up as rocket science. He works hard. You will more often than not find him between the two sticks in the 18-yard box.

The Argus:

Glenn Murray scores the winner against Fulham recently

“You can take his goal against Fulham. His positioning was that good that he asked questions of the defence, who were almost split into two. From then on it’s about the finish – and it’s a great finish.

“Leeds have got somebody in Chris Wood who seems to be assuming the responsibility of being the leading goalscorer.

“It’s a big focal point of any team and at Leeds more than most. But, having that focal point who can get 20-plus goals, makes him a figurehead and someone the fans like to hang their hat on.”

Wood slid in to apply the finishing touch as Leeds beat Aston Villa 2-0 on Saturday to cut their deficit on the second-placed Seagulls to seven points.

He has been around the block since leaving Withdean with stints at Birmingham, Bristol City, Millwall, Ipswich and Leicester. It looks like lessons have been learnt along the way.

Former Leeds midfielder Prutton, who fancies his old club for a promotion push, said: “He is using his frame a lot better. They are playing more to his strengths with Kemar Roofe just behind him. They have dovetailed very well together.

“Whether it’s Wood coming short and Roofe going beyond or Wood playing the way a striker needs to do, getting up against the defender and being physical.

“I use the example of someone like Glenn, who does that very well.

“There is obviously the benefit of experience, playing the position over several seasons and being successful.

“I am sure that strong mentality of coming back from a serious injury has stood him in good stead as well.

“He is a good example for someone like Chris Wood to look at in terms of career progression.”

Prutton has been hugely impressed with Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy at the back for the Seagulls.

He tells of how he watched them closely during the recent second half at Bristol City as they repelled pretty much anything that came their way.

But he wonders whether Albion might be able to take the upper hand in wider areas.

Anthony Knockaert returns to the home starting line-up this evening. Jamie Murphy and Jiri Skalak would appear to be competing for the other place, although Solly March has also been in the 18 of late.

Prutton said: “What Leeds have to be careful of is how wide the Brighton wingers are. You’ve got Skalak, Knockaert – although he has had a bit of a fallow period and understandably so – and Murphy, who I think is wonderfully direct.

“Leeds have been playing 4-2-3-1 if you like so Brighton will ask a lot of questions of Boukara and Sakho, who play the wider roles in the three.

“They will be asking a lot of questions of them, getting them back to defend.

“Brighton have quality but the confidence of Leeds will drag them nearer to competing with Brighton.”
