Anthony Knockaert has told admirers Newcastle they can have the title – as long as Albion go up with them.

The Seagulls will return to the top of the Championship if they beat Birmingham at the Amex tonight.

Knockaert’s only concern is stretching the cushion over Huddersfield in third.

The French winger, a transfer target for Newcastle last summer, said “I don’t care about winning the title this season. If we can do it, we will do it.

“We’re not stupid, we’re going to do everything we can to win this trophy. But if we finish second, 15 points behind Newcastle, I will be happy.

“I’m not scared to say it, because you know how much this club would love to be in the Premier League.

“You know how long they’ve been trying to do it, in the play-offs a few times and have always lost, so it doesn’t matter what position we finish.

“If it’s first or second, as long as we do it the club will be happy.”

Huddersfield host Norwich tomorrow night, when Newcastle entertain Burton.

The last-gasp home defeat inflicted by Burton on Huddersfield on Saturday has left the Yorkshiremen nine points adrift of Albion with a game in hand.

Knockaert said: "If we win it will be 12 points and they will have to win on Wednesday. It’s a big, big pressure on them and I’m really happy to be in this position.

“I’d rather be in this position than theirs, but I’m not saying it’s finished.

“I’m not saying it’s over as there’s still a long way to go, but the pressure is definitely on them now.”
