John Motson will make it two from three with Albion today – by commentating on their game for Match Of The Day.

The small screen legend announced his impending retirement this week and the Amex is his first stop since.

Motson was no stranger to the Seagulls back in their top flight heyday. In fact, he has done two out of their last three home games in the top tier.

Motty was there for the final First Division clash at the Goldstone when Manchester City’s 1-0 win sent the hosts down.

He did not do the first game of this season but returns today for the West Brom clash.

Motson spoke about an “air of desperation” around the Goldstone in his opening gambit to that City game in early May, 1983.

Both teams were struggling and City ultimately went down too. Unbeknown to many, he had also run the rule over the Seagulls in a previous game, away to Notts County.

That trip to Meadow Lane was purely a scouting mission for big Albion dates ahead.

Having described the Kevin Reeves header in front of the North Stand “which could send Brighton down” he was back on their trail at Wembley for the FA Cup final.

That was one of the few occasions when his words were overshadowed. Radio commentary of Gordon Smith’s last-gasp “and Smith must score” moment has entered into FA Cup and Albion legend.

Meanwhile the club use Brian Moore’s ITV commentary in the collection of great goals they show on the big screens at the Amex ahead of matches.

Motson’s commentary was as follows: “And Case through the middle for Michael Robinson. Can he beat Moran? He can. Can he beat McQueen? He can. There’s somebody to his right. It’s Smith. And Bailey has saved. And the flag stayed down!”

Motson also provided the commentary for Gary Williams’ memorable winner against Nottingham Forest at the Goldstone. And, of course, he was on the mic for Ricky Villa’s iconic FA Cup final winner for Tottenham against Manchester City in 1981 as a youthful Chris Hughton ran to join the celebrations.

Hughton said: “I have got to know him well over the years.

“There’s not too much I could say that everyone doesn’t already know. There are voices in the game instantly recognisable. And his attire!

“He will be a miss. I suppose everyone has to retire at some stage.”
