Chris Hughton is glued to the Premier League table as he tries to keep Albion up in their first season.

The Seagulls will climb into the top ten if they win at Bournemouth.

The trip along the south coast is only their fifth game, but Hughton told The Argus: “Although your concentration is not on the table, you look at the table every week, of course you do.

“Certainly for us the most important thing is to make sure we are out of that bottom three.

“When does it take significance? I suppose you are looking well into the season, but you are judging it week in and week out.

“We know and expect it to be a tough season, that’s normal. There will be lots of ups and downs and probably more than the table will be how we react to defeats, poor performances, and go again to try to pick up a good result.”

Albion are seeking successive victories in the top flight for the first time in 35 years following the breakthrough win at home to West Brom.

It would also give them a seven-point cushion over Bournemouth, who have lost all four of their matches.

Hughton said: “It’s incredibly early in the season to start thinking that way.

“The thought process last season would have been where we spent a huge amount of time (in the Championship), in the top two.

“The most important one was the gap between second and third place, that was more important than anything. I remember the periods of time where we spoke about if Newcastle were on top of us, so it would be no different.

“You want the biggest gap you can get between third-bottom, but it’s still too early to be thinking about it at the moment.

“All we’re thinking about is making sure we can be in every game we play. On a bad day in this division you can get well and truly turned over, but thankfully so far that hasn’t been the case.

“The four games we’ve played, I feel we’ve been right in them. That’s probably the most important thing for me at this moment.

“If you can stay in games for as long as you can, then you know along with that will come results.”
