Ini Umotong is hoping for the perfect send-off before earning her second international cap.

The Albion Women striker is back in the Nigeria set-up, three years after making her debut.

The call from new boss Thomas Dennerby for a tournament in Turkey next week rewards a season of progress in WSL2.

Now the script calls for a goal against her previous club Oxford when they visit Culver Road in the league tonight (7.45pm).

Umotong came to England with her family as a baby and earned her first cap against Mali in February, 2015.

She went to the World Cup in the same year without making an appearance.

Getting back into the squad has always been ambition so, when she saw an email from Dennerby in her inbox, her heart leapt.

She said: “The email was titled ‘invitation’ so I sort of knew what was coming although, at the same time, I was still a bit nervous when I opened it.

“I’ve no idea where he has seen me or if I have been recommended.

“But I think my move to Brighton has helped me get back in.

“I’ve started well here and my overall game has improved, especially tactically working with Hope Powell.”

Umotong boards a plane on Monday bound for the Turkey Women’s Cup in Alanya.

She could come up against Albion colleague Laura Rafferty during the tournament given that the centre-back has been picked by Northern Ireland.

They will team up tonight aiming to consolidate Albion’s third place in the league and take them close to the top two.

It is a significant fixture for Umotong and she would love to add to her three league goals this term.

The 23-year-old, who has scored six in all competitions, said: “I’d have liked to have had a few more goals this season.

“But it has really all been about learning ahead of WSL1 next season.

“When I came it was with the idea that we would be moving up and everything we do is preparation for WSL1.

“I think we have become physically stronger as a team and tactically better. Especially against Manchester City, they are a massive unit, fit and strong and very physical.

“We had to deal with that and I thought we did well against the top team in the country.

“It showed how far we have come.

“It’s important to remember as well that, while it wasn’t a totally new team, we had quite a few signings and we needed time to gel.

“I think we have done that ever so well. We are getting better with each game.”

Now comes another chance to show that on the back of the 3-1 win at home to London Bees in which Umotong was on target.

She said: “I go into every game with a winning attitude but even more so against my old team.

“A lot of the faces are still the same from when I was there. I know their strengths and hopefully that can be an advantage for me.”
