Albion were last night assessing their centre-back options as work continued on Connor Goldson’s expected move to Glasgow Rangers.

But the Argus understands Aston Villa centre-back James Chester is not currently one of them.

Work on the details of what is a complex deal to potentially take Goldson to Ibrox will continue over the weekend.

It is likely the Seagulls, who rate Goldson highly, are working on clauses which cater for him being a success in Scotland and potentially being sold for a big fee.

The Seagulls remain keen on Reading centre-back Liam Moore as well as other options.

Sunderland midfielder Paddy McNair is also of interest.

Albion have received enquiries for forward Sam Baldock but, as of last night, no concrete bids with the summer market yet to really kick into action.

They have opened talks with Niki Maenpaa after offering the Finnish goalkeeper a new one-year deal.

A club statement confirmed Albion are still in discussions with goalkeeper Tim Krul and his agent over the possibility of extending the Dutchman’s stay. His current deal ends this month.

Albion are monitoring goalkeepers and are interested in Fulham’s David Button although The Argus understands they have not made a bid.

Chester has been linked with a handful of clubs and will be desperate to get to the Premier League after Villa missed out in the play-off final.

Equally his club are keen to cash in on star assets as they face major financial problems following their Wembley defeat to Fulham.
