Micky Adams admitted Albion were beaten by a better side as they lost 4-2 to MK Dons at Withdean.
The Seagulls were guilty of poor defending as they remained perched just above the League One drop zone.
Boss Adams said: "We were beaten by a bigger, stronger, quicker side. We had a fantastic start and then caused our own downfall.
"We made mistakes and every time we made a mistake we conceded a goal.
"It's not as though our keeper has had to make bundles of saves but we have made basic defensive errors."
Albion are in a relegation fight ahead of their next League One fixture, which is a testing trip to Tranmere next Saturday.
Adams, who spent some considerable time talking to his team after the MK defeat, added: "We've got to battle through. That was the message to the players."
