Poyet: I won't say sorry to the referee

Gus Poyet watches from the stands Gus Poyet watches from the stands

GUS Poyet will not apologise for his criticism of referee Steve Cook – even if he is hauled before the football authorities.

The Albion chief was sent to the stands during the first half of Saturday’s game at Leyton Orient after Cook failed to award a penalty and red card for a challenge by Ben Chorley on Liam Dickinson.

The Seagulls were a goal up at the time and Poyet is convinced Cook cost them the game. He said: “There are no excuses. I am open to speak to anyone but don’t expect me to apologise.

“You could ask even the Leyton Orient fans, that was a penalty and a red card. The referee was ten yards away and didn’t give it. I was told he didn’t see it. Didn’t see it? He needs some glasses.

“I got sent-off and that is not a problem for me. All my life I have accepted responsibility for my actions. The referee didn’t accept his responsibility.

“He is quite young and for me it is the worst decision he has made in his career.”

It was not the only verdict from Cook which upset Poyet, who could now be facing a touchline ban.

“He gave Glenn Murray a yellow card in the first half for a foul from behind, which was fair enough," said the South American.

“But then Elliott Bennett was going through the middle of the park, he was brought down by (Sean) Thornton and he wasn't given a yellow card.

“So what happens later in the game? Thornton makes a tackle and he is given a yellow card. He should have been off. What was the difference?

"I think many people would like to see referees talking, not apologising but explaining their decisions."

seems poyet is getting stressed, having been away for nearly three weeks the treatment of Forster is a disgrace. how odd that elabd was given a contract before xmas, only for this to come out some two months later AFTER the transfer window had shut.. which means snide behavior to not only the club captain but the players rep.. what i cant really understand is where is elabd going to get a game this season? not at fullback! not in midfield.. we as fans need to think more than a player giving 100% is enough to wear the blue and white stripes, if as we are to believe we are going for promotion from this league, or i fear div 2 next year.. we need players and goal scorers of forsters ability, he i imagine feels he has done enough, to deserve a deal, and must ask why elabd was the only one to deserve a deal, after all he was useless under slade, adams and wilkins... final point is are we saying elabd is the quality to get us out of this division?

Go away mark, I'd say Forster is the one who has been a disgrace, rumour is he handed his written request on the coach, model professional eh?

oh yeah, and perhaps if you went to orient on saturday you would understand how bad the referee was.

wellgus will get a touchline ban, and whatever he says wont change the result.. lets be honest.. foster will have ten clubs after him, elabd a year ago was a free agent, and like whing came shuffling back here on his knees for a contract.. two bad moves... why give elabd a contract in secret? how odd he was awarded a nes one in december but it comes to light after the window closes.. forster is a man of principle. he never travielled on saturday.. so which coach did he hand it in on?

For those not at the match on Saturday, have a look at the incident on your Seagulls Player. How could a referee or a linesman not give a penalty for something as blatant as that? Both of them "not seeing it" beggars belief.

How was el-abd given a contract in secret? It was announced on the main website. Ken Brown has said that contract negotiations haven't begun yet, aside from Abd being offered a contract due to good performances. I've heard that Forster wants the same contract as Abd (18months + 12 months depending on appearances) but the club want to wait to see how his legs hold up, and whether or not we'll be in L2 next year and a reduction in wages is needed. In order to push matters forward it was alleged that Forster handed in his transfer request on the coach up to Orient and was rightly chucked off by Poyet. It's not exactly professional handing a transfer request in on the day of a very important game, is it? I think both the club and Forster are to blame, the club for being slow in their contract negoriations and Forster acting like a petulant child.

In terms of Gus's comments he is spot on, stone wall, nailed on penalty- worst decision made all season and the the referee should be held to account. Poyet will standup to his reponsibility and the referee rightly should.

Much as I am taken aback by the Nicky Forster revelations, there is too much hearsay at the moment to come to any definite conclusion on the matter ....
Friday appears to have been the day when GP and NF exchanged words, resulting in the latter being omitted from the Orient match ....
Let's be clear on things here, whatever our thoughts are on the player, Gus Poyet is the Manager, and no player should consider that he is more important than any other, and certainly not more important than the team ....
We might consider NF to be our greatest asset, even at 37 years of age, but does GP believe this?
I have every admiration for Nicky Forster, his abilities, and his overall contributions to the club thus far. But come on, how poor was the timing of his altercation with GP? Does he really believe that Brighton and Hove Albion revolves around him? Think again Nicky, because your actions might well see you completely frozen out of the club, and from speaking to fans of his former clubs, this is not the first time he has taken a high-handed approach ....
I sincerely hope that whatever took place last Friday, was only a storm in a teacup, because every single Albion player and fan needs to be giving the team maximum effort and support at this time ....

Here Here! More concerned that Holroyd did't get on on Saturday before Hart. If he is the future why didn't he get his chance? Let's see if Forster is pursued in the loan market, might not be as valuable as he thinks. Can't see him staying with us.

well forster got upset because oneplayer was given a contract, and the other ten were not.. lets be honest, elabd is not the answer to this league or division two.. wait till murray gets injured and we will be in a mess.. also what is it with playing hart instead of holroyd? looks like another contract heading for mr hart!! i wonder if knight has his hand in team affairs again?

Yes, I've watched it and I've never seen a more clear cut penalty, no wonder Poyet was cross. Don't apologise Gus, if you are hauled up before the beak explain yourself let them watch the video, then demand an apology from Cook.

Mark as you weren't at the game you have no idea who should have come off the bench. The game was very physical and Hart was the perfect player to come off the bench to cause problems for their defence, but he didn't have enough time to make a real impact and the best of the football was over by that point. Holroyd is too light weight and would have been ineffective in that situation.

we signed him to play when? if murray gets injured, we play hart who has not scored for three years? or we recall davies? either murray or dickinson will get banned or injured in next month or so.. i really am worried division two will be here before we know it.. " players are too good to go down" i have heard that a hundred times by fans up and down the country..
