Impressive Albion have to settle for a point

Albion enjoyed the better chances but had to settle for a goalless draw away to fourth-placed Colchester tonight.

It is a measure of how far Gus Poyet's men have come in recent weeks that will go home disappointed not to take all three points.

The Seagulls played by far the better football throughout against a physical Colchester side whose main tactic was pumping the ball long.

In that respect, Tommy Elphick and Adam El-Abd were superb at the back for Albion.

It was very much an evening of contrasting styles, Albion's passing game against Colchester's long ball tactics.

The Seagulls created the best two chances of the first-half with Adam El-Abd going close to opening the scoring on 33 minutes with a close-range header at the back post from Elliott Bennett's free-kick which Ben Williams saved superbly.

Williams had to be at his best again six minutes later to deny the rampaging Inigo Calderon who had been played in by Gary Dicker.

Colchester made a double change at half-time and started the second half strongly, putting Albion under concerted pressure early on but Poyet's men weathered the storm and continued to create the better openings.

Glenn Murray failed to make a decent connection with Bennett's free-kick and then Andrew Crofts headed wide from a corner on 56 minutes.

The chances kept coming, Murray stepped over a cross when he should have shot, then Bennett had an opportunity at the back post which he failed to take.

All in all, Poyet will take plenty of positives going into Saturday's home game with another of the play-off contenders, Swindon.

New loan signing Diego Arismendi travelled with the squad but missed out on a possible Albion debut due to a slight knock suffered in training.

Albion: Brezovan; Calderon, El-Abd, Elphick, Painter; Bennett, Navarro, Crofts, Dicker, LuaLua (sub Holroyd 63); Murray. Subs not used: McNulty, Forster, Hart, Carole, Hoyte, Walker.

Colchester: Williams; White, Okuonghae, Heath, Tierney; Prutton, O'Toole (sub Vincent 46), Izzet, Wordsworth; Odejayi (sub Gillespie 80), Platt (sub Lisbie 46). Subs not used: Cousins, Batth, Henderson, Ifil.

Ref: Anthony Bates (Staffordshire).

Good point, good performance. We had the better chances overall I think, and you say we were lucky not to nick a win. What a change around from a couple of months ago. Interesting that Holroyd came on and not Forster. Safety is very much within sight!

I'm so pleased for Adam El-Abd to be playing so well and deserving his place in the team. He has endured some horrible abuse in the past from 'fans', but has prospered under Poyet in a way few of us could have predicted. Good on him.

Rare chance for me to se Albion on sky , thought we played the better football and IMO Inigo Calderon was outstanding, we should have won tonight but happy with a point.

i actually agree with you, thought elabd and elphick were both strong, caldi and painter were excellent, the pitch was poor because colchester hoof the ball, felt sorry for lua lua, and bennet, the pitch was designed for hoofers, the centre three in midfield were class.. really now need three points saturday and we are in top ten.

Good strong performance with Brighton playing all the decent football on a poor pitch - Colchester's style of play made Micky Adams' football philosophy of last year look progressive......

Elphick and El-Abd both excellent although Colchester's style suited them. Forster not coming on atall even when Murray tired was a surprise and would suggest that things are still not all sweetness and light between him and Poyet. Oh by the way, I know this is something that is rarely said by anybody but the referee was excellent throughout.

what a load of hoofers, colchester, can see how they were 4th kick everyone who has the ball kick the ball so high into our box and wait for thier 10ft giants to pick up pieces .. well it didnt work... i really think gus has done a miraculus job 17 out 6in and atop two place next year... i really think that is on .......brezo caught every thing , and made saves.. shame tho foz didnt have a kick for 15mins at end, he could have snitched it...

Watched the game on Sky and Brighton were impressive throughout particularly at the back. GP has so got to tie up Calderon and Painter on long term deals as both were a superb, as were El-Abd, Elphick and Brezovan.

Generally good performances all round really except for Navarro who to be honest was anonymous apart from a couple of poor passes.

Holroyd seems a bit of a light weight.

All the cultured stuff came from the Albion and we really should have no bother in pushing upwards and onwards. 12th place finish I think.

Lol.

The wife suggested that too...I wasn't so sure personally.

I watched the game on Sky later in the evening, after the first 30 mins I thought i would miss out the second half as both sides were just booting the ball from one end of the pitch to the other, then Albion began to keep the ball on the ground with players running into space we gained a lot of possession. The second half continued with us looking impressive against a team hoping for promotion, our defense stood up well against a very robust and tough forward line and if Murray had Forster with him we might have taken 3 points.
