Poyet proud as defence holds firm

Albion boss Gus Poyet has praised his defence for keeping promotion-chasing Colchester at bay.

The Seagulls became the only side apart from leaders Norwich to prevent Colchester from scoring at home in last night’s 0-0 draw in front of the Sky TV cameras.

It was also Albion’s second clean sheet in succession and the point moves them six clear of the relegation zone.

Poyet said: “The back four defended well. They are making good decisions and the keeper (Peter Brezovan) is helping us a lot, especially in games like this one, coming out for I don’t know how many crosses.

“It was a challenge for them. Let’s see if we are good enough to keep a clean sheet away from home at Colchester with the quantity of balls that are going to come into the box and with their strength in the air. We did it, so I am very proud of the way we defended.”

Albion also had two penalty appeals rejected for challenges on Glenn Murray by Magnus Okuonghae in the first half and Kemal Izzet after the break.

Poyet said: “The first one was definitely a penalty, the second one no chance.”

Albion are now unbeaten for four games and Colchester manager Aidy Boothroyd admitted his side were second best. He said: “I think we were fortunate in the first half, when Brighton played very well. I am disappointed with a draw but we did not deserve any more than that.”

gus has his players playing to there potential, thats good coaching, he has them working at all partd of the game, our dead ball work is premiership quality, the elabd header was a class move from the training ground... from the days of cox not getting the ball past the first man things are really good.. quality coaching is now here.. the difference is massive.. next season with 4-5 more players the division one title will be ours.

I think claiming the League 1 title next season is a tad optimistic. I'll be happy with promotion next season any way we can get it-even if it means a play off final. In fact, that wouldn't be too shabby-a Wembley appearance just before moving to Falmer.

we played some fab football last night there is nothing to choose in this league i couldnt go and watch colchester every week route one football with basket ball players up front if we can keep the spainsh boy at the back and the mangement team here we look a good side that likes to play football on the ground at last and a bet for next season

exactly, colchester are top 4 side, and we looked a division above them, with 4-5 players this summer, and gus having a pre-season with them, the title is possible, yes a play off at wembley would be great.. but i would rather be thinking in 12 months time , championship football at falmer, someone will win the league next year.. with exception of southampton who look really strong, i cant see to many problems with it.. the coaching level at this club are now real.. thank god for Tony Bloom, or we would still have white and booker here with there mate dick knight.

Watched the game on Sky, professional performance especially at the back but a couple of players drifted in and out of the game though. One negitive comment, Forster should have come on.

Mark again with the snide backhanded comments against three men who did their best for the club.

It's great that we are now progressing but there's no need for that.

Yes indeed, Espana, por favor! What a difference a month makes. Great football, not much luck.... If anyone wants a laugh go to the Beeb 606 Colchester Site & read all the whinging on there. It all looks terribly familiar, lol.
Good times, thank you Gus, Mauricio & Tony......

calderon is class and has made all the difference to defence. his positional play is superb and his distribution top notch. elphick and el abd magnificent too. i believe brezovan deserves real praise too. i get the impression the back four prefer playing in front of him. crofts and dicker so solid in the middle of the park. murray should have taken one of his chances and also should have been subbed before the end as he was out on his feet... would have been nice to forster given a late cameo. also, bennett's delivery excellent and it was never going to be lua lua's night on that pitch.
all in all, the game showed how well albion are being coached at the moment and it is easy to see why mauricio taricco is held in such high regard by gus...

I couldn't agree more. Murray spent more time on the deck than doing anything productive.

Very happy to see Brighton playing some actual football. I've got high hopes for next season.

and special credit to the albion fans who showed up and made themselves heard, as opposed to lazy gits like me who watched the game in the boozer..

Yes, it was very chilly in the stand last evening but enjoyable (£18 to get in, not bad). Poyet is right to be proud of his team. (Very good disipline shown by all)
It's quite a journey to Colchester, for a Monday but it was worth it.
Now the spectre of relegation is behind us travelling seaguls can look forward to some exciting days out. Draw your attention to Tues 13th April Gills away and quickly followed by Southend away on the the Sat.

Hope everyone got back saftley.

A very good performance.

I do not know why Mark has to be negative about past servants of the club. It is unnecessary! They were part of previous successes. Without Dick Knight we may not have survived.

Rember the outcry at the recent Huddersfield home game, only 4,711?
Last night, a team in 4th attracted only 3,911.
Roll on Saturday and well done lads. It was well worth going last night, despite it being extremely cold.

Totally agree with you Mark, Forster should have come on. He has proven time and time again that he can come up with that extra goal at the right time.

I can't help but wonder if we wouldn't have walked away with all 3 points if he had been brought on in some of our recent games (e.g. Leeds, Colchester). This guy can make the difference on the pitch in a close game.

Whatever Gus Poyet's problem is with Nicky Forster, it would be nice if he can put the club before his own stubbornness and play the man here and there. Is he playing mind games with Nicky by dressing him and then deliberately leaving him on the bench? I don't know, but it sure looks like it to me.

This is the one cloud I see hovering over us right now. I admit the team is improving but when you've got a marksman as good as Forster, he should be used.

this is a complete non starter, knight helped the club, as chairman he did well, but name afootball club that has not survived, as for booker and white.. they are the reason player after player failed to reach there potential, we signed dozens of players who looked great first few games, and ended up over weight, or hoofing the ball.. complete non league standard.. the " good years" were based on Adams having zamora, who is now reaching his top form.. Dick did well moving the club from the dark days .. but over last 6-7 years its been the blooms funding the club! the days of knights nonsense are over, we are now a real football club, and we will be a championship club.. not a championship side as we were under coppell and magee.

Well played lads. Also surprised Forster didn't come on for the last 20 minutes. Murray had run himself into the ground on the cowpat of a pitch. Methinks Forster is now Poyet's third choice striker due to his contract dispute. Point proven Gus, now get over it. The match was crying out for someone up front with fresh legs who knows how to put the ball in the net. 2 points dropped perhaps.

I do hope Forster is not the third choice striker AlbionBloke. Holroyd maybe a useful addition to the squad next season but we are not out of trouble yet and it will need all our best players used which includes Forster being used and not left on the bench. I feel Poyet and his team have done a great job and the team is playing as a team and not as eleven individual players.

Aidy Boothroyd looked and sounded like a relieved man after the game. I can only think he breathed a sigh of relief when Holroyd came on and Forster was left on the bench. As you suggest Holroyd is one for the future. By all means put him on to gain the experience, when we have sewn a match up. Still, happy with the result, bring on Swindon.

Absolutely agree about Forster. Holroyd might be the future for us but at the moment we need Forster's goals.

It is not a non-starter.

(A) As you have now said Dick did well. We may have dropped out of the league under the old regime.
(B) Yes Zamora was the vital player but we did have some other good players - eg Dodge, Paul Brooker, Danny C.
(C) Why continually slag off people who were coaches at a time when we won back to back Championships and won a play-off final

My view is we needed a change of backroom staff. However, there is no need to knock them.

Totally agree that based on the latest performances we are looking a good side and with Falmer on the horizon, the future looks good.
