Poyet wants ten more points

Gus Poyet has challenged his side to remain unbeaten against the also rans and help him plan for next season.

The Seagulls have 41 points and boss Poyet reckons he can forget about relegation once they have gone past 50.

Poyet takes pride in the fact his team have not lost to a side currently outside the top six since he took charge more than four months ago.

MK Dons, currently eighth, are the highest placed opponents they have to face in their remaining ten games with Poyet believing ten more points will secure safety.

He said: “Sometimes it’s impossible to maintain a record but let’s keep it as long as possible. If that means the rest of the season, then fine.

“The sooner we get to 51 or 52 points, the sooner we can make some important decisions for next year.

“Normally you need to get past 50 points to be safe, so that’s 51 or 52. Maybe it’s less this year."

Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Brentford took Poyet’s record to six wins and four draws in ten games against sides now outside the top six. They have suffered defeats to Norwich (twice), Swindon (twice), Leeds, Charlton, Millwall and Colchester.

Poyet was keeping a close eye on his current No. 2 keeper Mitch Walker last night as he watched Albion Reserves play Eastbourne United in the Senior Cup.

Walker has been on the bench recently after Michel Kuipers suffered a broken finger.
