Albion have long way to go

Mauricio Taricco has warned Albion are still a long way from becoming a force in League One.

Gus Poyet’s No.2 insists they are far from being the finished article and mounting a promotion challenge next season, despite creeping towards safety.

A run of one defeat in six games means the Seagulls have five points and five teams between them and the relegation places ahead of today’s trip to fellow strugglers Oldham. Taricco has noticed an improvement since teaming up with Poyet in November but not enough yet to turn Albion into serious contenders next time.

The Argentinian said: “I think the players understand exactly what we want and I see things improving.

“We need to get a lot better anyway. There is a lot of room for improvement and there has to be.

“Our aim is to get safe as soon as possible and get away from the bottom but we want to get up, we want to go to the Championship.

“To go to the Championship we need to be a lot better.”

Albion are as close to the danger zone again as they were before Tuesday’s biggest home win of the campaign against Brentford, courtesy of Exeter’s win the following night.

Taricco said: “It is a reminder but we as the coaching staff didn’t need it because we knew it.

“We know what we need to do. We need to keep performing, winning games and adding points to our league position.

“A couple of wins can help you but won’t get you out (of trouble). It’s about staying organised and doing what we do best, which is passing the ball and knowing where your strengths are.”
