McNulty ready to fight for his place at Albion

Jimmy McNulty has revealed it would probably take Championship football to tempt him away from Albion.

But the left-back insists he is concentrating on winning back his starting spot with the Seagulls, despite a summer of interest from Scunthorpe.

Glanford Park boss Nigel Adkins was impressed by McNulty during a loan spell in the latter weeks of last season.

Scunthorpe, who are still in the market for a left-back despite the loan signing of Eddie Nolan from Preston this week, remain interested in taking him back on a permanent basis though the size of a fee for a player with two years left on his contract could prove prohibitive.

McNulty missed last year’s pre-season as he recovered from internal injuries which saw him lose a kidney. He never had a decent run as first choice last season and moved north after Marcos Painter made the left-back berth his own.

McNulty said: “Brighton were happy for me to get out on loan and I was fortunate it was in the Championship.

“I want to get in the team here and I’ve told the manager that. It's the first time I've not been first choice.

I’ve had interest from a couple of clubs in this division but, if I was to move on, it would be to play Championship football. I feel Brighton are becoming one of the big clubs in League One so why go to another club in this division?”

Great attitude.. But im afraid the Kid has lost it since the injury. We all know that, and it is of no suprise. He is slow, poor in the air, ducks out of challenges, weak and quite honestly very poor. I think my 92 year old gran will skip past him on the wing, and beat him in the air hands down everytime.. and she is 4ft1. I think a move away will be best for all concerned.

Agreed, but he doesn't look the same player since his horrific injury, imo. Good luck to you Jim, it would be good to see you back in an Albion shirt..........:-)

Great to hear that Jim always thought you were a very good player and am sure you will prove it again this season ,will be there to cheer you on when chance comes, others would have given up with that terrible injury but you have made it back all praise to you.

McNulty has been very soft defensively since the injury. However it would be nice to see him get an opportunity on the left centre of midfield in a 4-5-1. Still got a great left foot and would be very useful at set pieces.

Agree McNulty hasn't been the same since his injury but come off it nor would we be. I think he would be worth sticking with and building up again as he has a sweet left foot.

Some complete rubbish posting about McNullty's injury.Granted it is a serious injury but one he can easily make a full recovery from. After all it's only a kidney. It's not going to affect his abilty/speed/stamina etc.
Gus will pick Painter over Jim all day long i feel but that's Poyet's choice and i respect that.
Give Jim a run of games to restore his confidence back and he will a better player for it.Don't write him off just yet as on his day he can be a joy to watch. He has far more talent then what we are seeing.

Great attitude from McNulty and to be fair he's far too good a player to be the reseve left back for a third division side.
.... or rather he was before his injury. Despite what mhoc says above the jury's still out on whether he HAS made a full recovery. However he's having a full pre-season now, so let's wait and see what happens next season. Maybe he could play left side of midfield?

yes he could, we could have virgo back as well, must play people for what ever reason, we are trying to get out of this league, lua lua, forward, and defender are needed asap.. i have feeling painter will be centrehalf and mc nulty left back next year.
