Poyet wants killer instinct

Gus Poyet admitted Albion lacked a killer instinct as they bowed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tonight.

Poyet saw his side lose to Leyton Orient and said: "They scored two goals and we didn't. We had probably 20 attempts but it doesn't matter.

"You need to score and not concede.

"They didn't concede somehow, it doesn't matter how.

"I hope we all learn from it, no more than that."

Glenn Murray had the best chance for the Seagulls but saw his penalty pushed aside by impressive keeper Jamie Jones.

Poyet said: "There's no better chance to score than a penalty.

"You have got everything in front of you without the ball moving and anyone interfering.

"You have got to beat the goalkeeper only but he made a save. We'll learn from it."

First the Carling cup,now another rubbish performance in the JPT.If Poyet is not intrested in these cup competitions the supporters should be warned in advance that the players are not going to bother then we can all stay away and not waste our money.

Bad result but the league is what i'm more interested in this season. Yes lets hope we have learn't from it! GP has got 10 days before the next game and barring injuries hopefully the team against MK Dons should read......Ankergren: Calderon, Greer, Elphick/El-Abd, Painter: Bennett, Dicker, Sparrow, LuaLua: Murray, Sandaza.

The season before last we came close to winning the paint pot. It was also one of the most embarrassingly awful seasons I can remember in 43 years of supporting the club. It is a competition of no significance to the club whatever.

what happens if murray gets injured? obviously the spanish guy may come good, but i have feeling the squad is 16 good players and 7 bodies to fill the pre season photo, ie hart and horrid? what are they doing here?

What happens if the entire squad get injured? .... We really are in trouble then .... oh perish the thought! .... Gus will have to go out and get loan players in for every position .... oh no, he cannot do that can he? ....
.
Are you becoming an Undertaker or a Taxidermist Mark? 7 bodies to fill?? ....
Hart and Horrid? I presume you are referring to Chris Holroyd for the latter .... so why do you not use his name instead creating this warped picture of a guy who is still in GP's reckoning, as is Gary Hart .... so that answers your final question ....

Your abuse of Holroyd is quite frankly pathetic Mark by the Sea. You're a fully grown man throwing primary school names at people over the internet 'horrid' for 'holroyd', really? Are you five years old? I'd like to see you say it to his face.
.
I cannot understand any fan who feels the need to berate one of their own players.

Agreed, the league is far more important. That line-up looks pretty strong to me, although Ankegren does not fill me with confidence at all and we are yet to see what Sandaza is like. It sounds as if he could do a good job for us.
We will be at least in the play-offs!

You're right! There is no need for name calling. It's not like he's not trying! Even though I think we should have let him and Hart go they always give maximum effort!!!

Yes but the point is how can you throw abuse at one of your own players who is doing their very best!! If anyone is to blame it is the manager. And lets face it, all managers pick players sometimes that leaves the fans scratching their heads.

We are struggling up front, but i'm convinced our best option is Murray and Barnes together and with Lua Lua back in the side i'm sure we'll start getting goals. If it doesn't happen I think we'll have to go back to 4-5-1 with Bridcott, Dicker and Sparrow and Lua Lua and Bennett on the flanks so Sparrow can push forward. But don't forget that was the first time last week that Murray and Barnes started together and last night they were substituted pretty quickly. As for Holroyd, he's hardly been given a chance to be honest and I think to resort to calling him names is pretty pathetic. But Poyet clearly doesn't rate him. I think it would be better to put him out on loan somewhere and see if he can do it and get some form together. At least we'll then find out what he is capable of.

out of interest how much game time has holroyd had?? Doubt its actually that much so resorting to this level of abuse is absolutely pathetic.

Mark by the sea, you have a history of slating Albions youth setup as well as certain players. To use your own expression, you keep banging on about the same things over and over again, and this latest outburst, against a player who has not been given a fair amount of match time for anyone to have a real opinion on him, just stinks!
Sometimes your posts are very immature, and your latest effort is one of them. Grow up!

What on earth is the matter with you, a few weeks ago, you stated that we were 3/4 player light, now apart from a left back we have them players and your STILL moaning. That is twice now i have caught you contradicting yourself. You are obviously one of those people that nothing ever pleases you.

Its the next league match that matters, this Paint trophy has never inspired, so, if we are to have a 'bad day at the office' then I'm glad it was last evening.
With Greer, Kaz and the new Spanish guy available for the next match, after having the benefit of extra training time together, we should see how the new team really shape up, and compete for their starting place.

Mark by the Sea, did Holroyd bully you at school or something?? Give the guy a break. If he is wearing an Albion shirt, support him, if he is not pulling his weight or living up to Guss' expectations, Gus will do what is necessary. I hope Holroyd does not read this column.
In the past your comments have been informative and worth reading but recently, I wince when I see you have posted.
The club is in such great shape at the moment so please stop banging on about the imperfections.

Agree with the Bridcutt post - looked solid to me.

The lead up to there first goal was laughable - an advantage should surely have gone in our favour....but the ref chose to bring the play back when our striker was clean through on goal. Free kick came to nothing, ball straight up the other end and Coxy scored - albeit with a massive deflection. I guess thats football.

Agree with the post about Ankergren - he doesn't fill me with confidence either - doesn't look at all comfortable when the ball is played back to him, and prefers a flying punch to a catch at times. Still, early days for him i guess, needs time to settle.

Can't agree with the post about how poor we were - we created a whole host of chances, it was just one of those days where the ball was never going to hit the back of the onion bag. On another night, we would have won comfortably. Yes passes went astray and people didn't run into space - but let us remember that we are Brighton, not AC Milan, we play in the (old) 3rd Division, not the premiership - what are our expectations? I would rather see us try to play the 'beautiful' game than the 'lump it from back to front' that has been our diet for too many seasons.

I think as supporters, we done ourselves proud with welcoming back RS, DC and AR. All good servants one way or another. A few boos - but that is to be expected from some quarters.

Overall, I'm still upbeat about this season - crikey its only a few weeks old.....long way to go with many twists and turns - and not being in the JPT or the League cup does not bother me one bit......less games make us fresher at the business end of the season.

The reporting of matches and players is not accurate. We did not have 20 goal attempts, not even close, why say it if it is not true. There is too much spin going on, this is misleading supporters.

Good to see sexy Coxy again even if he doesn't look quite so hot in red. At least he didn't celebrate his goal, unlike a certain Southampton player at Withdean last season.

I note that as we have been knocked out of two cups it is considered that these results will provide a better chance of us qualifying for the playoffs, not exactly sure about this line of reasoning.

This is without doubt the best squad we have had for years. I still think Holroyd is one for the future and Hart clearly has something to contribute otherwise he would have been shown the door by Gus.Mark by the Sea it is time to get behind this squad because it is these players that are going to wear the shirt until January. You are as entitled to your opinion as anyone else on this site but other than your apparent acceptance now of El Abd you still find it necessary to single out some players or coaching staff to slag off. Give it a rest now for a few weeks and then comment on facts rather than what you think might happen

Yes Legend, it's not great for the 3000 who paid to watch it to be told the cup competition is a pain shortly before the game (surely they should talk it up). And there's a lack of regard for what the long-standing supporters want, a cup run and the dream of a final (they could at least pretend). BUT, can't believe they're not bothering, they want to win every match. Pleased for Slade. Disappointing to be out of 2 out of 3 cups by 1st Sep!, but great times ahead - an exciting squad and a brill stadium. Up the Albion! :) ('Intrested' has got another 'e' in it :) )
