Albion's £2.5 million striker Craig Mackail-Smith is at the centre of a club versus country clash.

Mackail-Smith has been named in the Scotland squad for a friendly against Denmark at Hampden Park on August 10 - the day after the Seagulls host Gillingham in the Carling Cup at The Amex.

Boss Gus Poyet is expected to use the competition for fringe players, especially now that his choice of substitutes is down to five in the Championship.

But he will still be sweating on Mackail-Smith avoiding injury for the South Coast derby at Portsmouth on August 13 if he plays for Scotland.

The clash was first highlighted in The Argus last month, after Mackail-Smith signed from Peterborough.

He qualifies to play for Scotland through a grandparent and made his debut as a sub against Brazil in March.
