Gus: We must be at our best

Warning: Poyet Warning: Poyet

Albion boss Gus Poyet has warned his team will have to be on top form to dump Newcastle out of the FA Cup.

Alan Pardew’s side will be missing key players in Saturday night’s fourth round tie at The Amex but Poyet still expects them to be a tough nut to crack.

The Uruguayan is not reading too much into the Toon’s 5-2 thumping at Fulham last Saturday as he believes that was a one-off.

Poyet told The Argus: “It was the first time they have really had a bad game and even that wasn’t a bad game, just a bad second half.

“I’ve watched Newcastle this year probably five, six or seven times. I even remember the game in the (Carling) Cup on TV against Scunthorpe, so I have watched them a lot and they have been on TV a lot.

“We know everything about Newcastle. It’s not a team we don’t know about, so there is not too much to study apart from the team they are going to put out.

“Of course, they are missing one or two key players, especially (Demba) Ba who has been outstanding, but we will need to be at our best. They have been doing absolutely fantastically in the Premier League, so imagine how good we need to be to have a chance.”

Ba is on African Nations Cup duty for Senegal with Newcastle’s new £7.5 million forward Papiss Demba Cisse and so too is influential Ivory Coast midfielder Cheick Tiote.

Poyet added: “I like to see them every week but, of course, it is better if they are not there when you are playing against them. But even the players that are going to play have Premier League experience and they have been doing very well.”

Newcastle have just returned from a warm weather training and squad bonding break in Tenerife. Pardew whisked them away after the Fulham defeat and the former Southampton chief is demanding a 90-minute display to see the Seagulls off.

He said: “The FA Cup’s very important for this football club. We want to do well in it.

“It’s s going to be another tough away game but at least we can build on our first half performance and we know we mustn’t switch off like we did in the second half.”

Senegal are out of the African nations Cup now, so could Ba and Cisse actually be playing after all?

Hope so because they will probably be jet lagged.

Don't think so. According to Talk Sport they will be doubtful for Toons next league match next week.

How would you have tackled the subject, then?

Maybe it got lost in Translation and what was actually meant was it will still be difficult without their top players.

It is the Argus that writes the story and headline.

According to BBC they will be back in time for their midweek game against Blackburn but not in time for Saturday...

Senegal still have one match to play even though they have been eliminated at the group stage.

Ur right of course Hovite, the press write the headlines and stories and some of us belive them all ! Thing I'm still concerned about is this stupid "window" of transfers and clubs buying players and loaning them back to their current clubs for a season or part thereof UEFA have just announced record losses for European football clubs.....this is just part of todays madness and until someone has the 'footballs' to change it , it will only get worse.

What you don't read, and the argus do not print, is the question(s) that is asked to bring about the above.

Gus doesn't just phone up the argus and give them his thoughts on a regular basis. Everything the argus print about Gus is an answer to a question they have asked.

Gus is going to sign two "significant" players during the January transfer window. We just have to wait until Feb 1st to find out who they are ?

Football professionals are always stating the obvious.
It's part of the job!

Best thing to do is take the transfer window with a pinch of salt bentnup.

It may be that if it was not in place there would be rumours & speculation constantly throughout the season.

That'd be even more fun!

Brezovan
Calderon, Dunk, Greer, El Abd
Sparrow, Bridcutt, Forster-Caskey
Buckley, Noone (if fit) or Barnes
CMS

I want to see us go for the win and there is nothing to lose in the FA Cup and no disgrace losing to premier league opposition

More importantly, they quite often only print half the answer in order to sensationalise a story.

Here's a player that Gus should go for and he won't cost a bean - Kris Boyd the former Rangers striker. Currently a free agent after contractual dispute with his last club Eskişehirspor claiming he has never been paid.

Thoughts anyone.

Never heard of him, but there again I dont watch two horse races very often ! As he's free he might be worth a look ? Perhaps a run in the devlopment squad ?never too late at 28 !

Kris Boyd is a fine player when the ball is played to his feet and he doesn't have to do anything except wait for the ball to come to him. That was ok for the SPL but he got sussed out when at Middlesbrough. Scottish supporters I know have very little time for him. IMO he would have to pay Gus for the privilege of putting on the Brighton shirt.

Yes, I prefer the three horse race of the Premiership too. ;-)

Exactly right Beaker66. I watched most of Boyds Home Boro games when living up there. He was initially thought to be a brilliant free signing, but turned out an absolute disaster and probably Strachans worst signing. And thats saying something. On big wages aswell
