Hoskins snubs Bournemouth

Albion striker Will Hoskins has rejected a move to Bournemouth, according to reports in Dorset.

But Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell has not abandoned hope of the situation changing before Tuesday night's transfer window deadline.

Mitchell claims Bournemouth submitted a bid for Hoskins, who turned them down to fight for his place with the Seagulls.

The Bournemouth supremo, speaking to The Argus's sister paper The Echo, said deals for Hoskins and Crawley marksman Matt Tubbs could be rekindled if there is a change in the players' circumstances.

Albion are refusing to comment on transfer talk as they prepare for tomorrow night's FA Cup tie at home to Newcastle. Tickets are still available to fans with a booking history.

So going by Hoskins on Twitter he knew nothing about the bid yesterday afternoon but has rejected by this morning. Hmm

Not sure what is going on here, and how Hoskns wil react to a Manager who clearly is happy for him to go. I hope Hoskins knuckles down and proves his worth, he has looked OK on his sporadic appearances to date. I expect that Gus knows what he is doing, and has a bigger picture view for the future.

Good luck tomorrow Seagulls. Can't be there but willave the radio strapped to my ear.

Seems like both clubs could have handled this better, if the player's version is to be believed. It must be quite a hammer blow to find your club have virtually sold you off after such a short run to prove yourself. I hope he doesn't end up in limbo and ignored by the manager.

Hope it's true. What on earth was the point of signing him, working to get him fit and then off loading him before he's had chance to prove himself.Besides, he looks a half decent player to me.If he is to be sold Albion need at least £750k to cover their outlay including his probable wages over the last six months. I dont think Will Hoskins ability is at all in question, he has been offered out as we are struggling to raise the budget to get a target man in to play alongside CMS- there is obviously a replacement sitting and waiting to come in should he leave.

I for one hope he stays and fights for his place. He should be given a fair chance after his injury problems.

What has happened with Noone to Cardiff? Have Cardiff come back with an increased bid. Hope he stays with the Albion as well.

You are probably right but I do not think parity or thereabouts on the transfer fee is good business. I think Dave from Bexhill is right and my guess is that there will be no deal unless the figure is substantially 'upped'

im glad he has rejected a move because he has looked good when he has played and showing potential. Big difference between offering a player for sale and accepting an unsolicited bid and Hosky will know that. We are after a striker to offer something different in supporting CMS. That will push him down the pecking order and there was an opportunity to move on if he was unhappy at the prospect or stay and fight for a place. We are very fortunate he has chosen to stay becuse with a new guy in we will have all sorts of options - no wonder Gus is peeved at the "only 5 subs" rule which must have played a part in accepting an offer from Bournemouth. With the talent in depth that we are building it will be hard to keep everyone happy! Hopefully Nooney will have the same attittude should Cardiff up their offer enough but after pathetic bids to us and Blackpool (for Matt Phillips) it's hard to believe they are now prepared to double their original offer.

Agreed, farside. I was about to say something similar: we have seen nothing to suggest that we OFFERED Will for sale, only that Bournenouth approached the club. Gus has stated before that, out of respect for the players, he would let them know of any offers and not stand in their way if it would be to the player's benefit. In this case, it seems to have been just an outrageously cheeky attempt to poach a player just as he starts to prove himself and before his value starts to increase accordingly.

Barnes on the other hand what?

Is a player that does what is asked of his manager, even though it normally means him playing out of position?

Gets back and defends when needed?

Is currently this season's top scorer?

OFten finds himself in space and screams for the ball but it never arrives?

Getting a little fed up of the criticism of Ashley, or any of our players. If you look at what he does during a game and the effort he puts in you might change your opinion. He came on at Wrexham, and played in the more traditional forward's role, and look what happened...

Cabin fever says...
11:34am Fri 27 Jan 12

I'm glad he's staying as, like he says, he's back to full fitness and looking forward to getting games (and goals!).

On another point, I may be wrong but I don't think it is uncommon for two clubs to agree a fee (if this IS what has happened in this case) without the player knowing.

The difference with Hoskins is that the whole thing was played out in the media. I think it is telling that, while frustrating for some, Gus plays his cards very close to his chest and will normally only comment on individuals when deals are done.

It is the last few days before the transfer deadline, so there are bound to be stories such as this popping up. We didn't have to contend with it last year as a L1 side, but being a top-half Championship side puts the club a bit more in the spotlight. Be prepared for more nonsense and unsubstantiated rumours on Monday and Tuesday...

Totally agree with the "unsolicited bid" bit. This doesn't mean that we are necessarily getting rid. It doesn't mean that Gus doesn't necessarily have him in his future plans. It could quite possibly be that Bournemouth have made an offer - they have apparently been interested for a while - and this has been passed on to Will in case he wanted to go.

But why he would want to go to Bournemouth when he is with the seagulls. His choice to stay would seem to indicate that he has not been told that he is out on a limb and that there is no future for him here.

I agree farside the "only 5 subs" rule only stifles the progress of players.

I can understand changing the pass back to keeper rule, about 100 years overdue, in 1992. I can even understand the tweaking of the offside rule.

But restricting the number allowed on the bench? WTF

The FA have overstepped their authority on this one and I would love to know the name of the executive who proposed this new rule? and the names of those who voted for it?

Name them and shame them!

Absolute madness in an age where the aim is to develop and move football forward in this country.

Instead it potentially ruins footballers careers and any hope of playing.

Like to raise a couple of points here....

Firstly, don't forget the machinations of agents who will tout thier clients to other clubs in order to solicit interest, and hopefully generate an unsolicited off to the club, which then unsettles the player, which will then start the merry go round off, and will sometimes result in a player moving for all the wrong reasons.

Secondly, this going on about the 5 or 7 sub rule is a little ridiculuous, as I remember, (and I am not that old), when a club could only name 1 sub, and that didn't affect the development of such players as Jimmy Greave, Martin Peters, Bobby Moore, etc... What affects them more is a lack of a meaningful Reserve Team competition, like the old Combination league, which could be pretty entertaining.

Well, maybe I am getting old....

And where is MTBS and his "insider" knowledge at this crucial time of the transfer farce....

Giving a club permission to speak to a player is not the same as selling him. Gus knew as did Hoskins, that this would be a backward step for the player. It does fire a warning shot to Hoskins though that he is not indispensible. Rather good management then on the clubs behalf.

So how come the Cherries were claiming it was a done deal between the clubs before the player had apparently been approached (unless the player is lying)? I'd say good management and simple courtesy meant the player was advised by his own club about a bid (as oppose to interest) before hearing throught the media.

It does indeed seem a little harsh on fringe players and youngster coming through. Someone needs to remind the powers that be, we can't sign foreign players for International games. We need home grown talent and home grown talent needs fewer hurdles not more. Does it revert back after this season or was the change permanent. If permanent maybe fan power is the answer, organised protests all over the country, we pay, we should have our say!!!

Glad Hoskins is staying, scored as many as Murray or Barnes last year in a team that went down which is impressive (including a screamer against us at Bristol).

As for the subs rule clubs with smaller squads couldn't always name 7 subs and complained as I think they got fined for it (which is ridiculous).

Also agree with the Barnes comments. He's at his best in the box, putting the ball in the net like at Wrexham. Playing 4-3-3 with CMS in the middle means he has to adjust to a different role and he's working hard for the team.

It was not Albion or Gus that made this story public. Did we agree a fee? Maybe not. Does Hoskins want to go? Is it all about money? Who knows? Therefore who can fairly and I emphasise fairly criticise the club when no one really knows the facts? I also believe the club are right to keep quiet, with all the underhand tactics used by agents, they are better off saying nothing. More importantly, how much more vocal would the criticism be if clubs to supporters all the targets they were going for and failed to land? As I said yesterday, it is silly season and all we can do is sit and wait for the truth to come out. Mean time I for one trust Gus and Tony to always act in the best interests of Brighton & Hove Albion. Look how much money has been invested in our future prosperity. Does that not give you a clue as to how committed Tony Bloom is? Why would he then keep Gus here if he is doing such a bad job? Come on guys 4.5 days of nail biting left. Trust them that have brought us this far, get behind them in the great push forward and let's see just how far we can climb together

Agree with you wholeheartedly about Barnes. He's doing what his manager has asked him to do. As for Will H, I think Bournemouth released the news prematurely, maybe in the hope that it would apply pressure. A bit shoddy for him to discover the way he did but if they were responsible for leaking it prematurely, they shot themselves in the foot!

That's a fair point, although i would have thought they will all up their game given the opposition, the competition (FA Cup) and the tv. Good chance to get spotted if you are looking to move on. That said, if it is an exciting time as a fan seeing the clubs progress, how much more exciting must it be for the players, actually being part of the squad that Gus has put together?

Why woudl Hoskins leave.. check him out on wikipedia.. he has consistently performed where ever he has been barring injuries but that seems all part of the modern game...

In June 2010, Hoskins signed a two-year contract with Bristol Rovers. During the early parts of the season, he boasted a 1:2 goal to game ratio after a great start to the 2010/11 nPower League One campaign and looked to be Rovers' new superstar following in the footsteps of players like Rickie Lambert, Jason Roberts, Nathan Ellington, Barry Hayles and Marcus Stewart, and has rapidly became a fans favourite. On the 6 November 2010 during an FA Cup first round tie against Darlington, he suffered a sprained ankle injury, ruling him out for around four weeks, but came off the bench two weeks later away to Brighton & Hove Albion.

I remember listening to that match and remember the torrid time he was giving us which obviously led to BHA eventually signing him!

As for Will Hoskins, I'm pleased this has turned out ok for us as I like what I have seen of him so far. Not much with BHA yet but I do remember the two cracking goals he scored for Rovers against us last year, both absolute belters. The best is yet to come, I believe.

Interesting comments. Sorry to upset and bore you by criticising Barnes! Will watch him closely this weekend and see if I have missed something. I have no issue with the number of goals he's scored - realise he has scored a few this year (mainly penalties), but it is his overall contribution that I have issue with. I haven't seen the last couple of matches, so maybe he has outperformed in those. But I have watched him home and away this season, and closely - I have issues with his first touch, his commitment (like I say, very often 'pretends' to go up for a header and then just throws his hand up to the ref), his attitude (straight red card when we already had our backs to the wall). From what little i've seen from Hoskins, including that magical finish at Cardiff, I think he's quality. Anyway, let's all have a close watch of Barnes this weekend and decide who's right!

Think we have to remember with Barnes that this is only his second full season playing in league football. There is no doubt that his first touch could often be better and his shooting can at times be erratic. However, like others have said, Gus trusts him because he commits to the team ethic and carries out his manager's instructions to the letter. As a young developing player, he will have good and poor games but there is no doubt that Barnes, more than any other forward or midfielder in the squad, is the most adaptable in terms of positions he can be played in to keep the team shape that Gus prefers. In early season games, Barnes struck up a good partnership with CMS, but then had to drop back into the midfield 5 to give more defensive cover. He was very good at Posh in the wide left role - both going forward and particularly in preventing Little from getting crosses in. A true team player who will pop up with goals, but yes he is still developing. The current criticism reminds me of the situation that El-Abd was in when Gus arrived - he always looked a good defender but his distribution was often poor, and so suffered abuse from the crowd. Now playing in a system that suits him, and with better coaching, we have seen his true quality. It's much easier to play when the crowd is fully behind you than when there are moans and groans if you make a mistake. Possibly not a co-incidence that Barnes' better games seem to be away from home.

Barnes has just got one of those faces that begs for a slap.
Last season he missed all the sitters and stuck one or two harder ones away in the first half of the season, second half he buried most of his chances. If he repeats that I will be well happy, also I have not had as much confidence in an Albion penalty taker since Garry Nelson.
