Tartan trio can fire Albion

Front man: Mackail-Smith Front man: Mackail-Smith

Mark McGhee has warned the Toon Army to beware of Albion’s Tartan Army as two of his old clubs lock horns at The Amex.

Captain Gordon Greer, Liam Bridcutt and Craig Mackail-Smith have been the backbone of the Seagulls’ Championship challenge this season.

Striker Mackail-Smith has already been capped by the Scots. Former Albion chief McGhee recommended centre-half Greer for a call-up while scouting for the Scottish FA and central midfielder Bridcutt also qualifies to play for them.

McGhee, now in charge of Bristol Rovers, told The Argus: “I must have watched Brighton six times this season and they have played very well, except at Southampton.

“I have been very impressed with them and the Scottish spine has been a major factor. Greer is much-improved. He has really come on since playing in England. He’s solid and comfortable on the ball.

“Bridcutt is the fulcrum who starts everything off and is also there to sweep up in front of the back four when they have lost the ball. He does a good anchoring job in there, which is key to their style of play.

“Nobody can question Mackail-Smith’s workrate. I have spoken to Craig Levein and people in the Scotland camp and they absolutely love him. His attitude is first class. I don’t think Newcastle will have an easy game.”

McGhee had two spells with Newcastle as a player. The Glaswegian centre forward said: “I loved playing for Newcastle more than anyone, even though Celtic were my boyhood team. The fans are so passionate.”

Hi, Well thank you Mark McGhee for giving Newcastle the heads up on who to watch I am sure this will help Albion achieve the win result at the end of the day.

I always thought McGhee is a decent, honest bloke. Didn't quite work out for him at the end of his reign here but there were some good times so I am pleased to see him back in the saddle, so to speak. Have a feeling he will do well at Rovers.

Yep, I'm sure Alan Pardew has been glued to The Argus all week for clues....
Would've been nice if the local paper had actually done a preview piece with someone a little closer to home. Something from the captain perhaps? Frankly, I'm bored with quotes from Gus (not his fault) about the transfer window. You Argus boys should show a little more vision and write about something that IS going to happen (like a football match) rather than inane speculation.
Thank you.

Argus staff are probably fans. So being fans you have to expect them to talk inane drivel now and again

I reckon it's the Watford old boys that will cause them problems, which does include Bridcutt.
He may qualify to play for Scotland but he never has, as far as I know, he might get a call from Fabio first!

Scotish spine ?

Laughable story, embarrassment to whoever put that in the paper.

You only have to take a bite of a piece of Walkers shortbread to be able to claim enough connection to Scotland that it gets you in their National team! What a joke.

If Bridcutt is Scottish I'm off to claim my slice of Brazil. And CMS, I can hardly understand a word he says in that thick Scottish Dagenham accent.

The transfer speculation threads this week, (either way), just outnumber football related subjects 9/8.
I don't think the Argus can win, because a total avoidance would result in a barrage of complaints from people who thrive on all the conjecture.
The demise of Scottish football over the last two decades is remakable. Before that, they qualified for five consecutive world cups, and the players' names were instantly recognisable.
Two notable players who represented the country but were born elsewhere, were Bruce Rioch, and Bob Wilson, but they were exceptions to the rule.
After checking that we haven't lost any of our squad to the Africa Cup of Nations, I rate our chances this afternoon.
Maybe the Argus could level the thread subjects at 9/9, with the headline ''Brighton fan optimistic''.

just for the record mate, if you count stories as 'threads',then from Thusday morning, which i would consider prime preview time, the score was 6-1 to transfers. Not one piece with a player in the build up. Are the paper not allowed to speak to players or are the journos too lazy to leave the office to do some proper work rather than picking information off the internet or from their mates in Bournemouth and Ipswich? It's poor, as far as i'm concerned. Great result though and great performance. I look forward to a piece with Will Buckley tomorrow.
